Tokenomics, Forecast & News Update

Introduction

The KuCoin hack, OKEx debacle, Bitmax shutdown and BTC dominance appreciation slowed down Verasity’s momentum just as we launched one of the biggest esports events in crypto (UWS PUBG tournament).
Nevertheless our technical accomplishments and ability to scale have never been better. All the parts of the Verasity ecosystem are coming together in the best possible way.
This article is meant to update the community as well as provide new information about what we have accomplished and are doing to make this the best project in crypto.

VRA Token Distribution & Circulating Supply Update

Below is a table setting out Verasity’s calculated Circulating Supply, locked and unlocked tokens. We will update this quarterly.
Etherscan links:
Total VRA Supply
Founders & Team Tokens
Total Wallet #1 — Foundation

Founders Token Unlock Schedule

Founders tokens are locked until the price of VRA reaches a target which is approximately in the range of the ICO price. To give the exact target price will harm investors as traders will take advantage of that data point. As long as the price remains below the target price, the Founders & Team tokens will not be released.
Only when the target price is reached can the Founders & Team pool be released annually. In each year (2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023) the Founders & Team qualify to receive upto 25% of their allocation if the minimum price condition has been achieved. If the target price has not been reached then the tokens remain locked. No tokens will become available for release in 2020.
We don’t believe that the Founders & Team tokens are a market overhang due to the onerous restrictions of the unlock schedule.

Funding Update

Current resources held by Verasity fund the project roadmap which has been published for the next 12 months. We forecast (see below) reaching profitability in 2021 which will finance the continuing runway thereafter.
The Foundation Reserve has sold 355,300,000 tokens (12.9% of its original total) to finance exchange listings and other costs. In the future, additional listings and expenses may require sales of VRA from the Foundation Reserve. Verasity had anticipated and disclosed this in the tokenomics update of April. See further information about the Foundation tokens in the VRA Token distribution section of this article.

VeraWallet Staking Program Update

Based on the staking program operating at full capacity throughout the calendar year 2021, and ignoring the timing of deposits and withdrawals, a maximum of 847,500,000 VRA will be required to pay the daily staking rewards. The staking reward rate is 0.1% per day (36.5% per annum) until 31 March 2021 when it becomes 0.07% daily (25.55% pa) until 31 December 2021.
Given that the staking rewards come from the Foundation Reserve or market purchases by Verasity, we believe that staking rewards have not been inflationary to total supply.

New VeraWallet Features Coming Soon

Liquidity Mining
Earn additional VRA by providing liquidity for a selected token pair. Send equal amounts of VRA and a trading pair token (i.e. DAI) to a special VeraWallet address to create a liquidity pool. Once active this will generate VRA rewards for each day of providing liquidity. You can withdraw your tokens from the liquidity pool after a fixed period or can leave your tokens for the whole liquidity mining period.
Instant Buy & Stake
Additional Top Up Methods
We will expand the credit card facilities to other vendors which will be announced soon.

Exchanges Update

Verasity started 2020 with a listing on KuCoin ‘one of the most popular and secure cryptocurrency exchanges’ and soon VRA’s trading volume was up to $250k — $500k organic volume per day, liquidity was deep and VRA’s price was trending upwards. Then, on 25th September 2020, KuCoin announced it had been hacked and it had frozen withdrawals. Following this, in early November Bitmax announced its interface was down for a week preventing any trading.
Without adequate liquidity from our largest exchanges and in combination with the rise of Bitcoin dominance from 58% to 67% of the overall market, VRA came under great pressure and its price fell from the end of September onwards.
Also in September, Verasity launched its Ultimate Warrior Showdown event in collaboration with the exchange OKEx. We were very pleased with the millions of video views achieved and we were looking forward to developing our working relationship with OKEx, however, shortly after the event’s conclusion the founder of OKEx was detained by the Chinese authorities and withdrawals were suspended by the exchange.
These four external events slowed our momentum.
We are glad that OKEx plans to reopen its withdrawals next week but we are now reluctant to deal with any exchanges that have ongoing investigations by government authorities.
Verasity is aware of the importance of having secure and liquid exchanges to trade VRA and it is one of our objectives to increase the quantity and quality of exchanges we are listed on. Over the next few months we plan to add new exchanges in various jurisdictions. We will be working with expert advisers and diving deeper into our due diligence on potential exchanges. We are currently negotiating with several exchanges but make no promises as to timing given that crypto exchanges are so vulnerable to hackers as well as regulatory risks (see OKEx & BitMEX). Verasity cannot predict which exchanges will have issues as we don’t control exchanges.
Do keep in mind that the community requested the following exchanges over the last six months: Bittrex, OKEx, KuCoin, Bitmax & Bitmart. We delivered on all of these exchanges but had to pause OKEx because of the government investigation and withdrawal stoppage.
We are currently close to finalizing a listing and hope to announce soon. Listings are announced by exchanges, so you will know when we are listed.

Buyback and Burn Update

Verasity has burned 2,135,033,305 VRA (17% of original total supply) since its launch. However, in 2020 there have been no burns because the income generated in the year was not sufficient to cover the additional expense of a substantial buyback.
This does not mean that Verasity has abandoned its intention to buy back and burn, it only means that we are waiting for our net revenues and fees to grow (see forecast below).
With regard to the communication of token burns, our legal advisers state that due to certain territories where VRA is available we cannot make commitments to dates, amounts or rates of future burns. Otherwise we risk being considered a security token and being delisted from certain exchanges (and not be able to get onto new ones). Hence we have to repeat that ‘a random amount of net revenues and fees earned by Verasity in fiat are used to buy back VRA from exchanges to burn’. Once a burn has taken place we will inform the community and it will be visible on the blockchain. We anticipate buy backs in 2021 and will inform the community after they take place.
Once we reach profitability which is anticipated in 2021 (see the forecast below), the Verasity Foundation is committed to buy back and burn VRA. Please note that Verasity is a foundation and by law is not allowed to distribute profits (it cannot declare a dividend) so to maximise token holders’ value it will continue to buyback and burn VRA.

Business Model

Our fundamental model has not changed:
Video publishers attract audiences to watch video content and ads. Users are rewarded for it, thereby increasing engagement and monetization.
This model has not changed. What has changed is the type of video publisher we are pursuing. Prior to COVID-19, we pursued traditional publishers. With COVID-19, we saw the opportunity to pursue gaming publishers and more specifically esports publishers. More importantly, we created our own tournament platform: esportsfightclub.com. This allows us to control our own environment, launch our own proprietary video player, own our video content, run ads on our player, and charge subscription fees as well as take tournament fees.
This also allows us to scale at our chosen rate. Initially we tested huge tournaments with the largest brands and broadcasters and now are doing smaller scale events to give us the space to build out more features for the platform before the next big tournament.
Esports Fight Club will require players to use VRA to purchase subscriptions via several payment systems: VeraWallet, PayPal and Credit Cards (although some tournaments are free for promotional purposes). Winners receive VRA for winning tournaments. Soon players will also be rewarded VRA for watching ads. Verasity profits from the purchase of game credits, subscriptions, tournament prize pools and ads. This is an entire ecosystem all within Verasity.
Some of the community asked us why we are doing smaller events now after such large events. Building a platform is not just about huge marketing. Our technical roadmap actually calls for different size events (micro events) in different periods, which allows the platform to add features and functionality that has been included in the development roadmap as well as to grow the platform organically. For more about Esports Fight Club’s future plans see this video with Mike Stubbs.
Initially we started with two world class tournaments which brought in millions of viewers and tested our platform. Now we are running micro tournaments while we build out the platform features to accommodate our vision of a world class tournament platform. This will include our proprietary video player as well as ad stack and finally Proof of View which will make the ad monetization so much more valuable.
It may be difficult to see the forest from the trees, but all the parts are coming together now:

Recent Achievements

In crypto it’s easy to forget what we have accomplished so far. Just in the last few months we have:

Our Reach in Gaming

Tencent
We had the first third party multi-country PUBG Mobile tournament with Tencent approval and in 2021 have an opportunity for in-game rewards once we have put on further large scale tournaments. This will put Esports Fight Club and Verasity in a unique position.
Tencent and Verasity will continue to explore multiple avenues to work together across multiple regional Intellectual Properties around PUBG Mobile and Asian markets.
Athena Gaming & Warmania
Diversifying esports activations through multiple localised companies to promote regional growth like Athena and Warmania.
Blizzard
Obtaining tournament licenses for all major games.
Because we are a small team, we have not had the resources to fully utilize our reach. We will do so in 2021 with large companies and projects to help us scale.
Additional Esports Fight Club activities
Verasity Scale & Adoption
Our PUBG tournament was one of the most successful events with this scale of adoption in crypto. Other platforms pale in comparison with thousands of views not millions. After our beta we went into full scale mode without a hitch — millions of video viewers without any issues. Now we are running smaller events while we expand the platform organically and build out important features and functionalities.
Our tournament had a prize pool that was five times smaller than the PMPL SA 2020 tournament but performed comparatively, and had a prize pool that was half the size of the Binance tournament but our stats were 88 times larger.

Roadmap Completions this Quarter so far

Although we announced this, few in our community took this big accomplishment in:
We added games last quarter:
and will add more in this Quarter:
Added features to Esports Fight Club:
Expanded current company and gaming relationships geographically to North America, EU & South East Asia.

Verasity Metrics

As of October we had a month on month increase in social stats of 26% and 154% over the previous 12 months. See the metrics here.

News!

  1. We have an agreement with Stripe Payment Systemto provide credit card payments in 135 currencies worldwide for Esports Fight Club. 2.8m websites use Stripe as a payment system with half in the USA. Now Esports Fight Club will include 3 payment systems: Stripe, PayPal and VeraWallet. Between Stripe and PayPal they cover over 50k gaming sites.
Stripe will allow us to:
Now that we have an agreement, Stripe integration will be completed in this quarter.
  1. Esports Fight Club has been working on partnerships within the esports ecosystem to promote cross platform rewards.
To this end we have been in discussions with major peripheral manufacturers including E- Blue, Razer and SteelSeries. As soon as agreements are reached, we will jointly announce sponsored product peripherals that will be rewarded in our tournaments.

Revenue Forecast*

Verasity earns revenue through subscriptions to its gaming and tournament platforms, commission on tournament prize pools, video ad revenues and on transaction fees for use of Verasity products.
Revenues in 2020 were lower than anticipated in part because of our need to pivot to gaming publishers due to the COVID pandemic which affected traditional brand advertising and publisher revenues. We have taken this into consideration in the revised forecast.
In Q1 2021 no material revenue is expected to be generated from Esports Fight Club or from ad revenues.
As the gaming platform develops and our proprietary ad stack is implemented revenue grows month by month. We anticipate that non-gaming publisher sites provide further video ad revenues from Q3 2021 onwards. Additional revenues are expected from the implementation of Proof of View in the latter part of 2021. We expect that the majority of revenues will accrue from ads.
3 Year Forecast*
Buyback and Burn Forecast*
As part of Verasity’s intention to buyback and burn tokens it has included in its forecast three annualised purchases. As discussed above we are unable to commit to dates or amounts of future burns, however as part of the forecast we would like to share what it may look like.*
In 2021, the forecast contains a total buyback and burn of 500,000,000 tokens at an estimated average price of $0.0010 (total $500,000).
In 2022, the forecast contains a total buyback and burn of 1,500,000,000 tokens at an estimated average price of $0.0025 (total $3,750,000).
In 2023, the forecast contains a total buyback and burn of 1,500,000,000 tokens at an estimated average price of $0.0050 (total $7,500,000).
Based on the forecast, we will endeavour to buyback 3.5 billion VRA or 34% of the current total supply, and Verasity would have generated a surplus of $1.9m for future growth and buybacks. Please note that the average prices used to calculate the buybacks are not targets or guarantees for the future price of VRA.*

Our Crypto Community Relationship

The crypto space and community is very unique, one that truly requires more attention from our side. Although we build amazing tech with real world applications, we have not succeeded in taking you with us on the Verasity journey. One big problem we have had is that esports and crypto live in two different worlds. Esports is only on Discord and Instagram, whereas crypto lives on Telegram and Twitter. We have added a Social Wall and hoped that more crypto followers of Verasity would check it out more often.
To get more community involvement we will start doing more AMAs, producing video and podcast content on a regular basis to keep the community informed and widen our crypto audience. To update the community on Esports Fight Club we will post a series of videos and post them across our socials. Here is the first one. We will also start providing quarterly business stats starting in 2021 so that investors can follow our progress much like public stock companies.
We are all here to work with the crypto community and to build the amazing future of Verasity together with you.

Expanding our Reach

We are always looking to expand our reach in order to grow the project. If members of our community have direct contacts with companies and projects that they think will be helpful to growing our business please let us know through our admins. What is helpful here are actual direct contacts and not just company names. Consider our current business as we want to focus on gaming, esports and video partners.

2020.11.24 11:52 RainSpectreX A Very Long, Extremely Complicated Rewrite of Dual Destinies (Turnabout ???)

Turnabout Countdown ,The Monstrous Turnabout
Some of you are no doubt confused about the title listed here. You'd probably expect, based on how its usually framed, I'd be talking about Turnabout Reclaimed, which was supposed to be Case 3, and is pretty much universally considered the best case in the game.
Unfortunately, there's a few problems with the idea of including Turnabout Reclaimed in this rewrite.
For starters, the entire point of Reclaimed is to be about Phoenix. Not only is it the case literally titled after him, but the case doesn't really involve Apollo or Athena in a substantial enough way to warrent having in the story without the good Mr Wright being present. Obviously since Phoenix is not a protagonist in this version, and is keeping his AA4 "unbeatable genius" persona, this poses a problem.
Next, a pretty conscious attempt is to make the cases, if not directly "serialized", at least feel like they form a cohesive narrative. Monstrous and Academy are pretty easy to tie into a more connected narrative through a few tricks in the rewriting process, but Reclaimed? Nope. Once divorced from it being "Phoenix's case", it's essentially complete filler, which is why it specifically was cut in the first place from the main game, no doubt.
Lastly, and this is a slightly more odd one, but for a number of very specific reasons which will eventually become clear, Pearl is cut from the DD rewrite completely. With her gone, suddenly there's a small but pretty noticeable gap in the case that no one can really fill, and I'm not creating extra things on a whim, and that combined with the above issues just makes this whole thing rather problematic.
So, with the problem of it being a dead-weight case with a lost purpose, we're left with two solutions. Either we rewrite it radically in such a way to work in a stronger framework....or we just cut it from the main game and try to use that free space for something better.
I made the choice here to try going for the latter. As much as I like Marlon, I think the better choice here is to be precise in what "matters". Who knows, just treat Reclaimed as a bonus DLC case in this context. It doesn't really detract from anything, after all.
This might be a polarizing left-swerve for some people, and a glorified fan-fic for others, but sit well with me. I hope you enjoy what I present here as the replacement "third chapter" in the storyline.

Flower of Turnabout
~~
We open proper to Apollo in a car, being driven somewhere by Ema. Athena's in the seat next to him, seemingly bored out of her mind due to the long drive, while Apollo just getting annoyed at how Ema just refuses to answer his questions. Or, for that matter, why she's letting Trucy sit in the front seat.
Once they finally arrive, Apollo gets out to see a very...amusing reunion.
Standing outside the prosecutors office is none other than Klavier, practicing guitar. After a quick catchup on who Klavier is (Apollo's rival, Kristoph's brother, a talented musician who's now retired to focus on his legal work), the banter re-establishes (in much stricter ways) that they're still "friends", more or less, not that that stops Klavier from annoying him. And Ema still hates him, unsurprisingly.
Apollo is incredibly confused as to what's going on, until he's lead into an office, and he sees Phoenix talking to a very familiar man...
Apollo is even more baffled now, both as to why he's standing in front of one of the most important legal figures in the country, or why Trucy is calling him "uncle". As she explains (after interrupting Phoenix), Edgeworth is Phoenix's best friend, and has been since they were kids. Since she was adopted, he showed up plenty of times to check up on them, and had been making a major effort to become someone powerful enough to make real change in the world. Since achieving his goal of becoming Chief Prosecutor, though, he's not shown up much, so she's overjoyed to see him again.
Klavier suddenly starts talking, and Apollo is shocked to see him suddenly talking formally to Edgeworth, completely dropping his normal demeanour around him. As Ema explains, while formally Chief Prosecutor, Edgeworth has a list of about 20 or so personal subordinates from across the law world who answer directly do him, based on the many contacts he's made over his career. As was hinted at at the end of the AJ rewrite, Ema and Klavier ended up directly working under him, and Klavier has immense respect for Edgeworth as a person. Ema's just happy to be working under her idol, of course.
The next question, of course, is why Apollo and Athena are even there. Which Phoenix gives a quick explanation on, it's a special mission Phoenix and Edgeworth arranged. The case is quite high-profile, to the point that it normally be expected of a more experienced lawyer to take on, but apparently the defendant specifically requested Apollo Justice. Apollo is now even more confused, but Edgeworth assures him that things will become more clear soon. He proceeds to go into more details about the case:
Phoenix's eyes narrow upon the mention of Void Justice. He suddenly tells Apollo that, even if he thinks he's not ready, that this is the kind of threat he'll have to face head on sooner or later. The more he has to see, the more he'll have to face, both of the threat "justice" can pose to the world, and what those who refuse to believe in it can do even more.
Edgeworth explains what he's talking about. Void Justice are a terrorist organization which was confirmed to exist two years ago, though evidence suggests they had been operating in secret in some form for longer, and are as of yet still unknown to the public. They have mainly operated in small capacities, thefts, black market dealings, those kinds of things, but are also suspected to have had their hands in far more serious crimes, up and too including assassinations and criminal conspiracy. Since becoming Chief Prosecutor, Edgeworth has made investigating them as a major threat to national security, and basically every part of the legal world needs to ready itself.
Apollo asks why the legal world, and Edgeworth explains it's because the justice system is Void Justice's one main target. The organization serves under a woman called Lady Himiko whose goal is to somehow dismantle the entire system, and create a world where the police, courtrooms and all other institutions don't exist. Apollo points out how utterly insane that is, but Edgeworth just says that, regards of how impossible it looks, it doesn't change the facts. He notes that, even if they don't aspire to the same lofty goals, many criminals align themselves with the organization due to the benefits of its anti-justice stance, making it a perfect haven for extremely dangerous killers. It is, in every way, a threat to to everything they (the heroes) stand for.
Apollo just kinda sits there, silently gulping as he's wondering what on earth he did in a past life to get into this situation, only for Edgeworth to finally give the defendants name.
Apollo changes his tune instantly.
~~
I'm going to be going relatively vague here, mostly because I don't want to go to the trouble of writing a full fan case, and that's no what's important here anyway. Character names are thus represented by
Apollo arrives at the detention center to see Clay there. The two of them know the reason why, because this is something of importance to both of them.
The defendant of the case, who we shall know as just Sensei, was Apollo and Clay's teacher in middle school. He was a kind man, whose love for his students was something he refused to compromise on no matter what. He always would say that his life was something as long as it was in the name of who came after, and always seemed to have a sad smile.
Ten years ago, however, Sensei was accused of a terrible crime, where he caused the accident that got Clay's mother killed. Even though there was another suspect seen fleeing the scene, the school board forced him to confess to the crime, but Sensei suddenly disappeared. He admits that he was unable to live with the idea of being punished for someone else's crime, so he took the cowards choice and ran. Sensei apologizes to Apollo for his failing as a person.
Apollo tells Sensei that it was that incident which, in a sense, began his journey to becoming a lawyer (remember that detail from the AJ rewrite?). He asks what exactly Sensei was doing at the embassy, to which he says it was nothing more than a whim. Apollo can tell he's lying, but knows there's nothing to prove his real reasons, so he's forced to let it go.
Apollo says that, no matter what, he will get his old teacher proven innocent no matter what. And, as it happens, Clay has something to say:
No matter what what, Clay is not backing down from the chance in front of him, Apollo, realizing just how passionate his best friend is about this, decides to put his faith in, and agrees to let Clay help him.
~~
Going to detail the characters out with their placeholders:
Lastly, there's Fulbright, who was there during the attack and lead the security team against the attacker. He however was completely cut off from the others due to the fire, so he's of relatively little help. He does, however, make it clear he will stop at nothing to get Sensei found guilty, calling Void Justice enemies of justice.
Most of the case is giving basic details, nothing terrible interesting beyond fun Apollo/Clay banter and discussions about Apollo's feelings towards Trucy and Athena. Eventually, however, towards the end, Apollo properly confronts Porter, and he ends up blurting out his true identity:
Yep, turns out "Elias Porter" is actually Spark Brushel, a fact instantly confirmed when he takes out a toothbrush. He'd apparently come to the embassy investigating word about some kind of deeper secret relating to the Borginian government, but ended up with nothing once Void Justice attacked. When asked why he changed his name and face, Brushel reveals that, six months ago, he was nearly assassinated. While he has no proof, he suspects that it was the work of Void Justice, who'd he'd been investigating on-off for years. After narrowly surviving, he was left no choice but to change his identity in order to go undercover and continue pursuing the story.
Evidently, this is going to be more complicated than normal.
~~
The trial begins with Apollo trying to psych himself up, though it's clear his nerves really are getting the better of him. After some banter with Athena, though, Edgeworth shows up to to deliver a surprise:
Apollo and Athena are...shocked, to say the least, at this revelation, with Athena being baffled as to why on earth Juniper became a judge of all things (because, in this version, it isn't something she randomly always wanted to be). This is where we first see Juniper in her school uniform and professional demeanour, which throws Athena off even more, and makes any attempt at interaction incredibly awkward.
The trial itself is standard format, first with Fulbright reporting the security before the break-in, then Detective discussing what he "saw" attempting to get into the Flower Garden, and then Brushel (still trying to hide who he is) reporting on the movements of the victim through to when he was last seen alive. Notably, in this case, both Apollo and Blackquill are at disadvantages, with Apollo stuck with the situation of Sensei being literally the only one there who could've shot Victim, verses Blackquill having to explain how Sensei found himself handcuffed with the gun nowhere near him.
Eventually, it comes out that victim couldn't have died in the garden, however, and Detective is in fact lying through his teeth to cover up failing to stop the break-in during the blackout. Brushel's testimony likewise is a mess of information (because Brushel), but eventually makes one fact clear, the victim was shot in the hallways around the break-in, and somehow the body was moved into the flower garden.
This, however, causes a huge gap in logic, because Fulbright confirms the one who infiltrated the building was carrying nothing when confronted but Hostage. Apollo, when asked, provides a simple explanation, the one in the suit wasn't actually Sensei. Unfortunately, this comes at the problem that literally everyone in the embassy was accounted for, meaning someone had to have infiltrated the hall completely undetected.
With the proven possibility, the trial is closed on a shocking note.
~~
The second investigation starts with Clay arriving at the WAA to discuss the case, including more Trucy antics (with a hilarious scene of Clay ending up thinking Trucy is actually Apollo's secret lover). Here, we learn about the circumstances behind his mother's death occurred on during a festival that was organized by the school board. While setting up a stand, the central setpiece suddenly collapsed, nearly killing one of Apollo and Clay's classmates, who only survived because Clay's mother shielded her with her own body. As Sensei was the one in charge of the stands, he was blamed for the accident and punished, but Apollo and Clay know, both from Perceive and a witness account from Clay, that the accident was actually a prank caused by the son of the school headmaster.
A question Clay asks is why, if the two of them knew who the real culprit was, Apollo choose to become a defence attorney and not a prosecutor. Apollo says that it was, as said in the AJ rewrite, because of Phoenix Wright, the person who showed him what it meant to defend the truth. His life, in that sense, has been defined by his teachers, Sensei, Kristoph, and Phoenix.
Clay, however, suspects that there's something more to this, and during a detention center visit outright tries to get the "real" reason Sensei came to the embassy. Sensei however says that there was never a "needed" reason, he just did it.
Another surprise is there at the hall in the form of Juniper, who is apparently here as part of her studies. Fulbright is essentially acting as her escort, but she switches over to Team Apollo simply because she trusts Athena's friends more. Apollo is left incredibly confused as to how to talk to her, but decides being "friendly" is the only way how.
After some more looking through of details and talks with the witnesses, the investigation is halted in a very...decisive manner when the room where the files were stolen (which Apollo suspects is the true crime scene) literally blows up, having had a trick explosive planted at some point, with the group only surviving through the timely intervention of Fulbright.
With the investigation of the crime scene unceremoniously halted, Apollo is left out of luck insofar as gathering physical evidence. Already exhausted, he's about to call it a day, only to suddenly get a surprise phone call. It's Klavier, who's telling him that he's uncovered something Apollo needs to know about.
Arriving at Klavier's office with Clay and Juniper still with him, the conversation begins as Klavier reveals that some investigation work has managed to heavily suggest who exactly was the Void Justice member who broke into the embassy; Kristoph.
Apollo is shocked by this, to where Klavier reveals he'd been doing some digging, and found that many of Kristoph's cases were with people suspected of having ties to the organization. While Klavier knows for a fact his brother wasn't actively working as a terrorist, he believes Kristoph was willing to help them in the name of pride, and evidently now that he's a wanted criminal he's fully taken to working with them in their plans, purely out of desire for revenge against the Wright's, Klavier and Apollo by destroying the world they inhabit.
Since he's not the prosecutor, Klavier decides to help Apollo out and gives him some additional stuff he unearthed, namely about the victim. As it turns out, victim is far, far more than he appeared to be, and specifically it appears he was in a relationship with Lady. Apollo goes through the files...and then stumbles upon a shocking detail. Victim was the shielded suspect in the accident ten years ago.
Apollo is shocked at this, wondering at the connections between everything that's happening, to which Klavier tells him that the truth, no matter what, will make itself known. Seems being Edgeworth's subordinate has rubbed off on him.
Once outside, Juniper tells Apollo that she had no idea how much he's had to deal with, to which Apollo tells her that it's nothing she has to worry about. Apollo however notices his bracelet picking up a nervous tick, and says he can tell that Juniper has some kind of weight on herself as well. Juniper, after a little pushing, decides to tell Apollo of her and Athena's past.
~~
Juniper was born a sickly child.
She didn't know her parents, they died in an accident not long after she was born, but her grandmother raised her with love. The two of them lived in the forest around the mountains, where she would be able to gaze up at the stars. It was a simple life which left much of the outside world to her imagination, her weak body meaning she was never interested in more than tending to her garden.
At school, there was another girl, who spoke very little. She wore heavy headphones at all times, and seemed to look at people with discomfort. She had few interests, and just sat alone by herself.
That girls name was Athena Cykes.
The two first met by chance, just a chance meeting when neither could partake in PE, but they were able to strike up a conversation. It was a friendship built on them being the only two who could talk to each other, but they were able to be friends because of that, with Juniper often visiting Athena at home, and the two playing together.
Things changed however, when something terrible happened. Athena's mother was murdered in a horrible crime, and someone Athena loved confessed to the crime. Athena herself had been a witness at the trial, and pleaded to no avail begging for his innocence. Juniper was in the gallery at the time, and was left just watching.
Athena was crying, and Juniper was powerless to help her.
After the trial, though, she bumped into a kind woman, who believed in what was right above all else.
That woman had been the judge on that very trial.
~~
Apollo is shocked to hear the story of what happened to Athena in the past. Juniper explains that, after the trial, Athena vanished overseas, and Juniper didn't see her again until they reunited during the previous case.
Juniper doesn't know what Athena went through while alone, but she couldn't believe her eyes when the two of them reunited. Athena, who she remembered as such a quiet girl, no acting full of energy and life. It was as if she'd completely reinvented herself at some point. But, by that time, Juniper had as well. She choose to become a judge because she didn't want someone to cry like that again.
What is most shocking however isn't that, it was the identity of the culprit seven years ago. Simon Blackquill.
Apollo is shocked by the fact that Simon murdered Athena's mother (flashing back to the encounter between the two in the prior case), but Juniper specifically tells him not to ask Athena about it, for the understandable reason that confronting her about such a traumatic experience would be an extremely shit thing to do. Apollo, upon hearing all of this, can tell that Juniper genuinely believes in what she's doing.
Apollo, after saying goodbye to Juniper and Clay, calls Phoenix on the phone, asking if he has any words of wisdom, given how emotionally lost he is at this point. Phoenix begins sharing some of his perspective on the case, but tells Apollo that, no matter what, his conclusion, all he needs to believe in his client. If he can do that, Phoenix is sure that Apollo will come to the right answer.
Apollo, revigorated, meets Sensei one last time, and learns the truth. Sensei came to the embassy because he was to "meet" with someone from the accident. Not the person who caused the accident, which Sensei says he had no idea was the victim, but in fact it was the classmate who Clay's mother died saving. Why he knew she would be at an embassy hall, though, he refuses to say. Apollo, however, makes a promise:
~~
The second trial is a lot of questioning and debating between the two sides about what happened during the break-in, specifically in relation to the blackout. it's proven early on that Kristoph couldn't have gotten in alone, and Apollo deduces that Victim must have helped him. This seems to point to Kristoph killing him, but that's impossible, because as it's worked out Kristoph couldn't possibly of moved the body.
Eventually, Lady is called onto the stand to testify about her being taken hostage. Apollo, however, manages to catch her in a lie, and deduces she is not the Borginian ambassadors daughter. She's actually a body double meant to act as publicity for the embassy while protecting the actual daughter from threats of assassination.
Eventually, however, Apollo realizes that, in fact, there was three people in the break-in, Kristoph, the victim, and another person, who Apollo realizes must have been Lady, who faked being taken hostage as part of the plan. This, however, poses one final question, how the victim somehow moved to the garden when there's no way the killer could do that herself. One Revisualization later, and the answer is clear; the killer moved himself.
The truth comes out in tragic form.
Lady was, in fact, Apollo and Clay's old classmate, the one who survived the accident ten years ago. She had been a Borginian transfer student to their school who was left isolated from everyone in the class. The only person who was kind to her was Sensei, the teacher who refused to hate anyone, and she cherished him as a result. The accident, and his punishment, were her suffering, one which she was left haunted for for her entire life.
Eventually, Lady tracked down the true culprit, and placed everything around getting close to him. She joined the same organization he did, agreed to become the body double for the ambassadors daughter (apparently they somehow manipulated the embassy), even entered his heart, all so she could backstab him. In the blink of the moment, while she had the chance, she shot him dead, hoping it'd be dismissed as a random backstabbing.
The impossible, however, happened. Rather than simply dying, Victim decided to instead protect his killer. He purposely dragged himself into the flower garden, knocked out and tied up Sensei, and then laid down, making sure to leave as little evidence as possible. The only reason why she likely even escaped as long as she did, was because of him.
Lady, unable to counter Clay's words, collapses in a broken wreck, screaming that she doesn't understand anything anymore.
Sensei is brought on stand, and says that he forgives Lady. He forgives her, because, regardless of her crimes, she's proven herself be a human being.
Suddenly, Sensei puts on a mask, revealing his true identity.
The Phantom.
As it turns out, the entire defence was fundamentally pointless. While the entire murder and backstory was indeed the truth, Sensei is sure enough a member of Void Justice, who aided in the break-in as the "handler", and the culprit of that case from six months ago. As he reveals, "Sensei" isn't even his real name (remember the placeholder thing), he only assumed the identity because he wanted to "experiment" with being a normal person.
Apollo is utterly speechless, shocked that the teacher who gave him a reason to be a lawyer was actually a criminal. The Phantom tells him that the truth is many things, in the end. Even if someone is innocent of a crime, it means little in the face of justice if they themselves have committed a sin. He was innocent those ten years ago, and he was innocent today, but that changes nothing to the ultimate truth of who he is or what has happened. He is a member of Void Justice, the enemy of the law, and that is the only truth which matters.
The courtroom is left in chaos as the Phantom makes his escape, with Apollo powerless as his reason to be a lawyer falls apart.
~~
Apollo stands there, devastated at what's happened. His legs are trembling, unable to even grasp what happened. For a second, he's almost willing to give up if it means he doesn't have to see this again...
Apollo turns his head, and sees Juniper standing there. She watched the entire trial and, even with how it ended, she's surprised at how...human, in a way, Apollo handled it. Even though it turned out so harsh, he genuinely believed in finding the truth, and tried to even reason with the culprit when he realized what had truly happened. Clay, Athena and Trucy show up and provide additional moral support to cheer Apollo up, culminating in this little exchange once Clay's eyes start welling up:
Detective shows up to rub the whole thing in Apollo's face, laughing that this whole thing has proven him "right". Ema, without a moments hesitation, allows Athena to throw the asshole across the room. As he scampers off, saying that he's right, Ema tells Apollo that Detective is the grandson of someone who "imparted" their sense of justice onto him, and consequently believes that just is the only right one in the world. Apollo can tell she feels quite personally about the whole thing for whatever reason, but he's getting taken off her now, so it doesn't really matter.
Apollo, having relaxed, decides to meet with Edgeworth again.
~~
At Edgeworth's office, he says that, no matter what, Apollo did a good job helping prove the true events. He confirms to Apollo that the Phantom is a high-ranking member of Void Justice, whose goals and true identity are unknown to everyone. No one had any idea he and Sensei were the same person, nor why he requested Blackquill be the prosecutor against him (this is foreshadowing).
Edgeworth admits it was probably too hasty for Apollo to get involved with something as dangerous as Void Justice, but that it was only a matter of time before the matter came up. Not just because of Kristoph having joined the organization, but because of the thing he is being prepared to do.
Edgeworth suddenly reveals the truth. At some point in the past, Lady Himiko made the agreement to negotiate with the law world. The negotiation was for the eventual assembly of the "greatest trial" in history, one where the concept of "justice" is on the stand. For that trial, everyone, defence, prosecution, judge, detective, all individuals associated with law must band together, should they wish to defeat the threat Himiko poses to the world.
Together, Phoenix and Edgeworth have been assembling a group skilled enough to conduct that very trial, one Himiko herself would accept. Edgeworth tells Apollo that he and Phoenix would never be able to conduct that trial, nor would anyone who he (Apollo) would think as "more worthy", the reasons of which Apollo as of yet would never understand. Phoenix, however, believes that Apollo is exactly the person who can face the threat, someday, though he just told Edgeworth he had a "good feeling" about Apollo.
Apollo is left baffled by what Edgeworth is talking about, to which Edgeworth tells him that it doesn't matter yet, because there's still much for him to learn. Before leaving, he simply wishes the world of Apollo, and expects that his creed will help to change the world.

Sorry this took so long, I kinda hit writers block. As always, will go into rational in comments. Next we get to the bit I've been really interested in talking about.

2020.11.22 02:19 Artnunymisss How I Use Asteroids

One thing people ask me about all the time is asteroids and how to use them. There is an epic thread on lindaland about the way people use different ones. Here are just a couple of ideas about how I use them. I will add more later if people want to talk about this.
The inner asteroid belt lies between the personal planets and the outer planets, between Mars and Jupiter. It's believed to be where bits of other planets gravitate to when they are ejected. So objects in this asteroid belt reflect everything between our personal selves and society at large. For example who we are as a sibling, mother, partner, etc. The many different ways we interface with other people and the world.
Here are a few that I use routinely:
Juno the Spouse - shows the partner and also how the person is in partnership. Roger Stone and Paul Manafort have Juno synchronicity. It's not just about marriage, but the first person you text when something happens, your main touchstone in life.
Ceres the Earth Mother -- shows how the person was mothered and also how to mother them. Ceres also shows relationship to natural resources. I expect strong Ceres in anyone rich from oil, mining, or lumber. Ceres charged into hell to retrieve her kidnapped daughter Persephone from Pluto. So when we see an inexplicable crime, we may do transits and see what was happening with Ceres, what the motivation was.
Pallas Athena the Field Marshal -- Pallas is where we identify patterns and create strategies. Well-aspected Pallas can make someone a higher-level thinker, a tactical strategist. Also great for arts and crafts and all things Greek.
Chiron - shows what will either make the person stronger or kill them. In a disappearance chart if transiting Chiron is badly aspected expect the worst. I just looked at the chart of a woman who was found overdosed in the woods. She had transiting Jupiter tightly conjunct the Node, opposed by Chiron. "On to the next big adventure." She also had transiting Ceres the Earth Mother conjunct Neptune on the natal Midheaven, found overdosed in the woods. Chiron is where we need to watch our steps.
Vesta the True Believer is everyone's personal true north, the master they ultimately serve. If your life is a flame, Vesta shows what temple it's in.
Alexandria Ocasio Cortez has an asteroid named after her because she won a science contest in high school.
Honeycutt shows where the person wants more than their share.
Lie and Pinocchio, you get the idea. Same with Gold.
Child and Sado often feature in sex offender charts.
Atropos is the body in the ditch.
Pholus was the centaur tasked with guarding the sacred wine of the centaurs while they were out basically partying and whoring around. Then Hercules either bullied or tricked Pholus into giving him one sip. Then Pholus couldn't stop him, and boy were the other centaurs pissed. It's where you tell somebody a secret and they blab, opposite of Sphinx. Look for Pholus the Beans Spiller in the chart of every Trump associate.
MadHatter is about gaslighting, going crazy from your toxic environment. Beyond simple discomfort with dishonesty, actual major psychological damage from emotional abuse.
For a few examples.

2020.11.20 21:27 AbletonRinzler Rinzler and Willow: The Order of the Vault - Nexus War (Premonition)

"I didn't believe me and Willow would be seeing the Zero Point up to this point, but I guess desperate times call for desperate measures." Ableton Rinzler and Willow arrives at the Vault Site within Athena. The enter the underground gladiator pit within Neo Tilted. A bunch of Vault followers fills the rows, while the primary members of the Order of the Vault stand near the rail. Infinity, Luminos, Madcap, the Chaos Agent, and Dream stand at the center of the pit. Infinity speaks to the crowd. "Greetings, Order of the Vault! We've gathered here to proclaim what is possibly a massive threat, to not only the Vault, but to the entirety of Fortnite itself." The lights shine down on Blacklight, Dominion, Shadow Archetype, Grimoire, Grind, Bonehead, Ableton, and Willow. "From the evaluations on all of you, it seems that some of you haven't improved since your Talisman's awakening." Grind lets out a loud "Ewah!" from his position. "But I'll describe the Order as this: In the beginning, and believe me, there was a beginning, everything was in its proper place. The meta was linear, just as it should be. But then a group identified as the tryhards changed all that. Especially when... What was it again? Oh yes, when the Meteor came along. Once the tryhards started messing around with it, they buggered everything up. The Zero Point's energy shouldn't have broken out of the Vault. But, nonetheless, here we are. Bloody Hop Rocks." Infinity continues. "Once the Zero Point's energy bursted out, Galactus wasn't far behind. Have I mentioned him yet? Galactus is a being, often regarded as the Devourer of Worlds. He feeds off of energy. Wait, that's an oversimplification. Energy is a rather broad term. It may be better to explain it as the spark of life. The purest form of energy that has existed. Is that better? Hmm, not sure. Sounds a bit hippity-dippity new age-y when I said it out loud. Anyway, this type of energy... Galactus feeds on it. He conquers and consumes worlds. It's kinda... his thing. The ballcrushingly bad news is his appetite is ferocious, voracious, insatiable even. He's hungry... very hungry. Bottom line, if you don't sort sh!t out, he's going to gobble up this world, just as he gobbled up others." The crowd starts to roar. They know of the imminent threat coming for them. Infinity heads over to Rinzler and Willow. "We need to go inside the Vault. The Zero Point awaits..." Infinity opens a Rift, as he pulls both Ableton and Willow into it. All three end up inside the In-Between, a section of the Vault that holds the Vaulted weaponry over the years. "Zero! Ableton Rinzler and Willow awaits you!" Zero is seen, sitting at the desk in front of the Zero Point. "Good, Disciple Infinity. You truly impress me sometimes." Zero faces Rinzler and Willow. "These two are the tricksters you were talking about? I half expected to see raw power, like Aaron Black, or maybe some comedic relief, like Bonehead or Grind." Willow responds to Zero. "You must be the main leader of the Order of the Vault. The one who leads the Disciples in their quest for order." Zero responds. "Yes, Willow. That is correct. Your history with Ableton Rinzler dates as far back as the Door to Darkness, held within the Oakdirge Lodge." Willow holds her hands. "How do you know?" Zero answers. "I had Infinity resurrect Ableton Rinzler from his charred remains, after the passing of his old Duo Partner, Joyce Baldwin, formerly known as Cobalt. Infinity gave him the message to find you. This led him to finding the Final Reckoning poster of you and heading out into Hexsylvania and locating you. He married you for your kindness and beauty, Willow. You are Ableton Rinzler's true other." Ableton speaks up. "How do you know about Cobalt?" Zero answers. "Ableton Rinzler... No-one is ever really gone. He still lives within the Vault, as do the other fallen souls. I know he meant much to you, just as much as Willow. But had he be alive, you wouldn't get this far. Willow was the key in helping you be the member you are, surpassing those like Aaron Black and Ebenezer Wright. You two have, and always will be, entrusted with Infinity's help, like it was with you and Willow in the beginning." Willow hugs Rinzler. Infinity hugs the both of them. "It was a pleasure serving by you two. You both achieve so much, that exceeds what past leaders have done." Zero faces Ableton. "Ableton Rinzler... Me and the other Disciples have made a device that will help you and Willow in the Order of the Vault's battle to protect Fortnite." Several arms sprout from the ground, and removes Rinzler's Proton Pack. They then attach a small vessel to his back, alongside a miniature Zero Point. "This is the Artificial Zero Point. It has the same properties and benefits, but is less powerful than the real Zero Point. May it help you and Willow in the Nexus War." Willow hugs Ableton again. "Thank you, Zero!" Zero waves at them, as the exit the In-Between. The three then appears outside the Vault. "Okay... If you've been paying attention, or even if you haven't, it should be abundantly clear that things are seriously out of whack. Business as usual, for you two. Anyway, I'm having a bit of a heated debate with the old Tart and his Apple agents, and it's making it really hard to keep the reality stable. I mean, honestly, look at it. It's practically being held together with tape... and bits of string." Ableton and Willow looks to the sky, as Galactus is getting terrifyingly close. Infinity faces Willow. "Willow... The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed. It is indeed a precious gift to understand the forces that guide oneself." Willow's hands start glowing a cerulean color. "Summon it, Willow. Let it guide you." Willow clenches her hands, as a Rift Butterfly forms in front of her. The Butterfly then shapes into a Glider. The Arcana floats before Willow's eyes. Infinity claps. "The Arcana will aid you by your side, Willow, just as the Convergence does for your husband, Ableton." The other Order of the Vault members arrive, joined by both Dr. Jekyll and Igor. "Disciple Infinity! Galactus is getting dangerously close. We need to ready all available outposts!" Infinity turns to Igor and Jekyll. "Jekyll, you take Grimoire, Grind, and Bonehead." Jekyll faces the three. "Everyone! Stick with your dance partner, and prepare for war!" Infinity then faces Igor. "Doctor Igor, you will aid Blacklight, Dominion, and Shadow." Igor nods. "I won't fail you, Infinity." Infinity turns to Rinzler and Willow. "You both, and your division, are with me. I'll give it my all to assist you in any way I can." Ableton nods. "We're glad to have you with us, Infinity." Willow kisses Ableton on the lips. "This is our chance to take back the world! Let's take the enemy out together, Able!" Rinzler hugs Willow. "Willow..." Infinity faces the two. "Now go! We don't have much time!" The countdown to judgement begins. Galactus is nearing the world. The fate of the world now rests in the Order of the Vault's collective hands.

2020.11.20 14:16 jiminycricket3 critique of Electra Heart

The Jungian term Elektra complex, [I’ll try to simplifying it enough to make even the likes of Jordan Peterson cringe]. It goes something like this, it’s counterpart, ‘the Oedipus Complex’, the Oedipus complex is Freudian, where Boys are dominated to some extent by their dads, but would like to be their own individuals and possess there mother, [there mother because that’s the woman they can relate to at a young age],but let’s simplify that by saying they just wish to have power and a have a female partner of their own, but are constantly held back by constraints of the essence of their parents or dominating element’s in their lives, like society saying NO ‘’the super ego, ’’,[even if that is just more perceived by the youth than is actually is true, because it’s an archetypal instinct, it has the same or similar effect], but also the more ancient heredity ancestors instincts I.E. the imposing of the super ego over them, and even more poignantly how much they are restrained by the comradeship in Testosterone and dopamine brain chemical led activity, to be an individual. A successful overcoming of the Oedipus problem is to be reasonably successful and find your own partner at a more mature age, [now when I say a more mature age, this complex depending on many many independent variables can last from 3 days to 30 years]. However the unsuccessful is the repression of this by overbearing issues like that of over dominant or repressive often jealous parents, or and other societal superego and anxiety factors and so continuing the Oedipus complex. Please refer to Freud’s Oedipus complex for more in depth explanation. Now Freud’s idea about girls adolescence and complication’s basically said, ‘Girls are confused about not having a Phallus and blame their mothers, for bringing them into this world, ‘scarce half made up’, they therefore put their love into their doting Daddies, however on realising the futility of this during adolescence, they realise that there mother has not got a phallus either and consequently she then associates more with her mother’s same plight, while retaining a jealousy of Boys now instead of her Dad as she doesn’t want to compete with her Mother., Freud called this stage ‘Phallic envy’, and henceforth she now feels the need for a Phallic substitutes, like wanting a Baby, or presents or new cars or another pony and because this is all unconscious it is therefore not realised by the Girl to what she is actually jealous of and about and consequently therefore the replacements are never quite totally fulfilling, because she doesn’t know what she’s jealous of in the first place, [or she might do, but she’s not letting on], the feminine is the divine secret keeper, there chit chat verbal gossiping is just surface waste., Whatever you give them is never enough, weather you care to believe it or not,. Look it up if you want greater depth. Personally I think it’s never enough because back in the more Farrell cave so called primitive days, they would of needed a constant supply of nourishment and protection, which sublimates in the modern sophisticated ages to more materialistic things.. Now Jung in his first little tiff with Freud said something like, ‘you can’t leave it at that and the language is too crude, and it’s not complete, why not call these Girls issues, ‘The Elektra complex’, after the same Greek author as Oedipus, Sophocles.,’and as a counterpart to it. The story is of a heroin who revenged her father’s murder and saved her brother from being killed by her mother’s Lovenew husband , and in saving her Father [or more importantly, ‘the name of the Farther ‘and protecting the Baby, the Archetype of the King’s dignity and new life were resurrected, and his son would go on to rule and so hence in herself completely overcoming any jealousy of masculinity, and also succeeding in not being in the shadow of her Mother at the same time, and becoming a protectorate I.e. her baby brother, herself. [and what if you were a woman, wouldn’t you prefer to be compared with that invisible and all powerful force of Electricity, rather than just being jealous of your old man’s Dick].This gives a twist to the feminine as the heroin of protection and righting wrongs. Frank Miller of the Marvel comic dynasty has a superhero wonder woman character called Elektra. Spelt with a K,as in Sophocles play. I’m not really going to attempt to go through the technical eloquence or style of each songs, or lyrics line by line, just the gist of the whole song; you can get that from other bloggers, just really the themes based on the title of the album. Now I’m using the vinyl double LP version which includes the song’s ‘sex yeah’ and her most famous ‘how to be a Heartbreaker’, and ‘Radioactive’. These may not be on your UK CD version, which is a shame because they fit the concepts nicely and are slotted in the right places. The general concept of the LP is in a linear fashion with our Heroin going through the Elektra complex completely and eventually out the other side, not un-similar to Pink Floyd Oedipus concept album,’ The Wall’, which we will do another day So back to the album, Marina starts off the LP with a couple of songs in the doting daddy stage, where she feels freed up to do as she pleases because she’s young and has a protectorate daddy , so she can experiment with satisfying her jealousies by, playing the game and getting boys, or maybe even girls as well, who knows,[but these are the more carefree years, teenage time to play, but let’s stick to the script], to get Boys arousal and fascination ,this could satisfy the envy she feels, ’but don’t forget, she doesn’t know why she feels this envy, it’s sub conscious, but still very much there, now you have to take all this with a great big pinch of salt , because it’s all theory’ many now considering much Freudianism as pseudoscience’, the biological reason for sexuality has got a lot more to do with psychological evolution than phallic envy, and to a far lesser extent social construction [ take another bi –pedal animal like chimps or ancestry homo sapiens, the females would wait for the males to bring home the meat of an animal the males had just killed and hence the female submissive position to the males for a share in the spoils, as well as the protectorate from the masculine, this could lead to jealousy in her of the masculine or just a shear survival need and hence desire of their ‘males’ dominance and acceptance of them in the pack/tribe]. If Freud is in anyway right it’s more a sublimate game of these survival archetypal instincts than women being actually jealous of masculinity in general let alone there phallus, [but it’s I suppose more the phallus is the main representation of Masculinity], so let us just say for model dependant realism sake, women act as though they have envy. So to the LP. The first songs ‘Bubble-gum bitch’ and ‘Primadonna girl’ are songs about being a bit of a bitch and playing the Field, so to speak. Testing her own ability as a woman, to get what she wants and needs, her shares in the spoils. Now ‘Lies’, is maybe a first attempt of a truer love that was messy and failed, now entering the final Elektra complex stage, dose out Heroin’s Journey want to turn back to parental care or can she really move on. ‘Homewrecker’, is a song and possible the nastiest on the LP, she’s recoiled back from her first attempt at the failed relationship in ‘Lies’, now leading boy’s and possible others husbands down a path, with psychotic narcissistic conditioning where the kik for her is the home wrecking and misery she causes as a side effect of her loose affairs, [cos when there’s hurt , you must have had some kind of an effect on them, or they wouldn’t of cared], [phallic envy/ you decide, I think it’s just more for a woman to prove that she can be quite nasty when she wants to be, developing her survival and more predatory side], or just plain WHAT ‘why would she want to do that. , I think Freud used the crude terms of ‘phallic envy ‘and ‘castration complex’ for Model dependant realism sake, more as allegories rather than statements of facts, but that’s not how he wrote it, he did kind of write them as facts and somewhat deserved the desertion of his students like Jung and Alder, especially after his book Totem and taboos, where boys kill and eat their dad, but that’s another story. I think it’s just more an evolutionary need to be desired [you being desired in Darwinian terms for your ability to reproduce, or potential at least, so being desired is a healthy thing. An unsuccessful completion of the Elektra complex leaves women in limbo land, examples being unfulfilled mothers and manic depressives, and Homewreckers are examples, just in case the postmodern 4th wave feminist tear me apart. I’m only going on Freudianism’s, which is not necessarily the truth or at least not wholly. Now the song ‘Starring Role’. Again the need to be desired, and not just put in a box, as a cockles breeding machine, [now Freud’s concept of phallic envy, or just masculinity if you like, I think it’s stretching the barriers,],it’s more to glamorise herself, or at least be equal in a relationship, and not just a lover buddie and baby maker, so she’d rather be alone than be over submissive to the man, especially one that doesn’t think anything of her , that’s she kind of fallen for, ‘well this song is kinder healthy, she standing up for herself in a , she’s breaking away from the feeling of being the puppet of masculinity, even one man though that has a little of the daddy type of protectorate value in him, one possible a bit Alpha maley,[ she’s not wanting to be kept in the Elektra complex by a substitute farther figure] she’s looking more for respect as an individual than just for this, this has an attraction as well ,where she can have a ‘starring role ‘,maybe even get someone to fall in love with her, [I’ll let you conjure up what love is], which could lead us down a seminar of feministic freedom quarrel, which I aint going to do, or even try. Now we get into the middle part of the concept, the Snow White part, why Snow white, well it could be sleeping beauty or the Nutcracker, same thing, you die as a girl and wake as a woman , and this die as one and waking as another is not just for Girls, this is a more Jungian theme alchemically , to suffer the poison of the result of eating forbidden fruit, to die only to find you come alive, you die to one idea and wake to another, ‘living in a state of dreaming’, is a prelude to this sleep a daydream, a naivety, ‘Power and control’ is an explanation of why a woman might practice her Elektra power in a cat and mouse battle of the sexes , to establish, that yes the feminine has a physical weaker position in muscle body mass but that doesn’t mean ‘’’I’m weak’’’, so beware silly boy, big biceps is only one tiny aspect of it all. ‘Sex Yeah’ is looking at the age of information and the effect it has had on the general concept of natural role models from past ideas of man/ woman, husband/wife [how technology and so called civilisation has cultivated natural instincts in a sublimated modern age, and especially the over exploitation of it], , also a lovely big snub to the monotheistic over zealot male dominated religions of the monotheistic Abrahamic sects, where is Mother ISIS, or Mother Mary, or Athena the heroines of our deity society. ‘Teen Idle ‘ is the centrifugal song on the LP, the change, she wishes she hadn’t wasted so much time proving silly points that didn’t really hit home, like being a Bubble-gum bitch, and spent more time doing something useful like a prom queen and become more literality cultural aware, something that would of given her more foundation in the long run, it’s a fantastic song, my personnel favourite, but there all good, NO great,, ‘Teen Idle’, I think is especially poignant to the concept, as you can still be a woman , still play the girls games, but be part of society, educated trendy, good looking, if you had played your cards right!, ’, if you don’t waste time being a narcissistic ‘Homewreker’, or worry about being taken advantage of all the time, what I believe and even some of the Feminist have missed about the plight of women, is there historical disadvantage too at least the idea of Masculinity , [how many men have had to put up with menstrual cycles, pregnancy, reduced biological clock for being able to balance career and baby making and much more, they say they get it BUT do they really feel it], Teen Idle says it’s OK to be A women, and yet in all yer crazy sometimes hurtful little ways, is being a prom queen anything less than 22 egocentric, dopamine led guys kicking a bag of wind about’. NO of course it isn’t anything lesser, it’s not. Nor say is the more feminine dominated hobby of horse riding over say more Masculine motorbike riding, in fact it’s a lot harder and has the interaction of two species as opposed to the control of inanimate object, it’s really is OK to be a woman despite what some of the leftie lunatics in the lunatic Olympics say ! Valley of the dolls, A fantastic piece of Art by Mapivia Diamadis, a big Nod and a wink to the film Valley of the Dolls .A David Lynch, concept like in ‘Mulholland Drive’, we go to tinsel town not to be reborn but to die, to die perchance to dream , to reawaken to reality and get a Jordan Peterson grip on ourselves, and what we represent to life, now like Tess of the D’Urbervilles’, she goes to the religious place to die, @only to find she comes alive’. Spelt Hypocrates IE not hypocrite, is clearly Marina [the nymph of the water age of Aquarius] showing once again for the love of her Greek roots, the Greek Philosopher ‘Hypocrates’, has had many papers published in his name that he did not write. But the song really is about one of those guys criticising the girl for her naughtiness, yet probably being a totally, well perhaps not total but hypocrite himself, OK she says I weren’t perfect but you Know it happens, you’re not so perfect yourself, but thanks for pointing out my flaws, I now Know Daddy’s not perfect and I can relate to Mummy, I’m Electric not Elektra. The most famous of marinas songs ‘How to be a Heartbreaker, ‘and a favourite with the young girls comes quite rightly as a kind of reflection at the end of the LP, you can still be a Little Elektraly , still play the game but more as a trainer of Naïve boys/men and to practice not being too Naïve yourselves, but more aware of why you feel the way you feel and do the things you do and not so viciously as in bubble-gum bitch and Homewrecker, ‘more let them down a little more gently this time around’’, Radioactive, I think and is saying, OK you guys you can criticize us girls, but you’re the ones who once you have got what you want, [if you didn’t fall asleep that is] you would just bugger off, but be careful we girls know what your like, and we can and will pre-empt it and I’ll leave you before you do me, we can both play at ego kicking. And like electricity I can radiate into your mind and soul, to give you power to turn your lights on you didn’t even know you had, but then again I can just as easily turn them off! Fear and Loathing, is the surrendering of the Elaktra complex to Love, I want a Lover a genuine Lover and someone that I can share with in trust and love, ‘[good luck with that one]’,. It’s more of surrender to casting off your insecurities in belief in yourself to not being hostile or wishing to beat people, [because you now see the traffic coming] because you know yourself and finally you can love and be loved, [she’s found her mowgli’s road], Marina has arrived. Now remember I compared it’s greatness to The Beatles Sgt Peps, the run off on side two on the ‘ Sgt Peps’LP, says in a babble form, the original language of innocence says ‘there can be no other way ‘repeated in a screeching fashion, well the last little goodie of Marinas masterpiece, is a very feminine babble talk, a little like John Lennon’s wife Yoko would slip in here and there on hers and Johns album, It’s fun and warming and mystical, Marina must of got this comparison when slipping this in. The name Marina is a play on Mariner, sea going, in Jungian archetypal ideas, we are in the beginning stages of the age of Aquarius, Water [which is the absolute Feminine as opposed to fire the masculine] , Elektra Heart’s main theme is the power of the Feminine to Be feminine, as the female, the invisible force, that the masculine can never see, that even Noel Gallagar had to admit to, ‘she’s electric’, can he be electric too, well NO!, No boys allowed!, Girls need to keep their ammunition dry and locked away, every female Knows that. The album cover is baroque/burlesque, the over zealot red lipstick slightly smudged in a slightly sadistic archetypal Joker fashion, the curls like medusa snakes, she looks both seductive and warning at the same time. Marina has somewhat claimed the concept shows her altered ego and this is not really her, but I think it shows all sides and proves she has incorporated her defensive and predatory instincts nicely with her more social ones , as Jung likes to put it incorporated her shadow. Thanks for sharing it!. P.S other Jungian concepts that would of added to the LP and I’m sure Marina would have been taking into account in the song ‘Power and Control’, would have been the Anima and Animus, Feminine/Masculine concepts. If you are interested in Jungianisams, Jordan Peterson is probably a good place to start, especially his podcast analyses of certain Disney films and the Bible. ‘’Teen Idle’, gave a nod and a wink to this.

2020.11.20 13:48 jiminycricket3 [Letter] Critique on Marina and the Diamonds , Electra

Our role in the 'WITH INTEL' partnership

We have already demonstrated with XMG FUSION 15 that we can be an equal partner to a giant such as Intel. Intel's reference design for the QC71 gaming laptop was sold world-wide through various brands, but no partner like XMG brought so much support and after-sales firmware fine-tuning to the table.
Over the lifetime of XMG FUSION 15 we were always first to release countless BIOS updates, including the major feature upgrade in June 2020 which delivered highly sought-after premium updates to all existing customer, based on the feedback we have received from our community over the months. Up until now, XMG FUSION 15 is still one of our gaming and content creation bestsellers and we plan to continue to support it well into 2021 because it is still a unique combination of form factor, battery life and performance that is still absolutely unparalleled in this industry.
With SCHENKER VISION 15, we plan to repeat this success. We have had countless meetings with Intel since the launch of FUSION 15 to help them shape their roadmap, to deliver customer feedback and help fine-tune the hardware and software solutions of the next generation. We have started testing samples of SCHENKER VISION 15 already months ago and have been instrumental in helping Intel to test their product outside of the lab in a real-life environment, with diverse usage scenarios and with a keen eye on fine-tuning and the quality of user experience. Already in our hands this product has gone through numerous firmware updates and we are looking forward to further fine-tune it ahead of the first consumer-ready shipment in January 2021.

Current List of Feature Requests

We already have a list of talking points with Intel to make sure that this product will go the last mile and reach 100% perfection. For the sake of tracking our progress with Intel, we will share some of the items here.
[Last Update: November 19, 2020]

Ability to disable Touchpad Toggle (top-left) tba
Some of these requests mirror the things we have done on XMG FUSION 15 over time. For VISION 15, we hope to be able to deliver them faster.
If you have a feature request, no matter how unique or obvious it is, please let us know in the comments below.

Pre-Order, SKUs and Shipping Schedule

We will open pre-orders on December 4, 2020. The first shipments should become available in the middle of January 2021 according to Intel's current build-plan. We will go for i7-1165G7 and 16GB only - there won't be any Core i5 or 8GB configuration from us.
We commited to All Silver, and All with Touch display. A 'Midnight Black' edition might be planned for later in Q1 2021.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does Intel Tiger Lake keep up with AMD's and Apple's latest CPU offerings?
A: Not too bad, I would say. The i7-1165G7 in VISION 15 beats AMD's 4000U series in Single Core performance and reaches ~75% of the result of the AMD Ryzen 7 4800U in Cinebench R20 Multi, despite having only half as many cores.
In Cinebench R23 Multi 10min Loop, the i7-1165G7 reaches ~77% of the result of Apple's M1 in the actively cooled MacBook Pro M1 - although it remains to be seen how these two competitors fare in the skin temperature vs. fan noise department. With a 15.6" housing and the very efficient cooling solution, we expect VISION 15 to be ahead of the 13" MacBook Pro in that regard.
But a CPU is not only about raw multi-core performance - it is also about the platform it is enabling. There is much to be said about the list of little-known features that Intel supports in Tiger Lake, but the key difference makers are PCI-Express 4.0 for outstanding SSD speed and Thunderbolt 4 for unparalleled connectivity. AMD still has no answer for Thunderbolt (and no USB 4.0 implementation either) and Apple's USB 4.0 implementation on the M1 silicon is reported to lack support for eGPUs.
Other notable features in Tiger Lake compared to Intel's predecessors include:
  • Support for 4 displays in total (Intel HD Graphics only supported 3)
  • Native HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4a
  • QuickSync with AV1 hardware-decode up to 8K HDR
  • Intel Gaussian & Neural Accelerator (Intel GNA) for AI acceleration

Q: How does the cooling and audio system of VISION 15 work exactly?
A: It's pretty simple. As you can see in the picture above, the it has a dual-fan cooling solution with one heatpipe for each fan. Now the base unit of the laptop has a mesh above the keyboard. This serves a double function as a kind of speaker mesh and air inlet. Despite the speakers being on the outer bottom edges of the chassis, the unibody is built in a way that it transports the sound very well to that mesh so that the sound feels like it's coming from the screen. The result is a very crisp audio volume - without having to fiddle with any 3rd party audio enhancement apps.

Q: How does the system behave while on-battery?
A: It is part of Intel's Project Evo design guidelines that a system must not throttle too much when running on battery. In VISION 15 this is implemented perfectly, where neither CPU nor iGPU are performing below 95% of the 'plugged-in' performance on a full battery. This number might slightly go down when you battery approaches the lower levels, but you'll be able to work on VISION 15 with full power for a pretty long time overall. Your system will be fully responsive - no matter if plugged-in or on battery.

Q: Does VISION 15 support display output with VESA Adaptive Sync?
A: After already having pioneered NVIDIA G-SYNC in XMG PRO and ULTRA series in recent years, supporting the more open Adaptive Sync standard in as many models as possible is one of our design goals for 2021.
Intel Tiger Lake is the first mainstream CPU platform in which Intel’s iGPU is supposed to support Adaptive Sync according to Intel’s marketing claims.
We tested it on our upcoming XMG CORE 14 with i7-1165G7 and GTX 1650. VRR ouput worked fine*** via Thunderbolt 4 (aka USB-C/DP) with external monitors as long as those are marketed either with “AMD FreeSync” or with “G-SYNC compatile”. Essentially, those are monitors that implement the VESA Adaptive Sync industry standard. However, monitors that implement the proprietary method of NVIDIA G-SYNC (with the built-in G-SYNC module) are not able to support VRR from the iGPU in our tests.
* Curiously, with current Windows and driver, VRR only worked for content that was rendered on the NVIDIA dGPU even though it is indeed displayed through the iGPU framebuffer.

This chart is just FYI, based on XMG CORE 14. Please note that VISION 15 does not have a dGPU and is not planned to be upgraded with a dGPU either.
Now, VISION 15 does not have an NVIDIA dGPU so we need to get it to work on iGPU instead.
According to our contacts in Intel, the lack of VRR on iGPU is due to missing Windows Update. According to Intel, everything already works fine on the “Windows 10 Iron” Build 21H1 19624.200504 (or later) which is currently only available for members of the Windows 10 Insider program. We will try to find out when this patch is supposed to hit the mainstream Windows Update cycles.
However, we don’t assume that proprietary NVIDIA G-SYNC panels will be able to be supported – same like AMD desktop graphics cards can’t support AMD FreeSync on those proprietary NVIDIA G-SYNC panels.
Meanwhile, VRR is called ‘Adaptive Sync’ in the Intel Graphics Command Center and is enabled by default.

Q: Will it be possible to apply Undervolting (Voltage Offset) on the CPU or iGPU?
A: We currently see no avenue to apply undervolting on any of the Tiger Lake systems we are launching. We have discussed the matter with the author of a popular free tool for Undervolting and tried a few unreleased Beta-versions and we are pretty confident in saying that Voltage Offset was still possible in Ice Lake but is currently hard-disabled in hardware for Tiger Lake. We have discussed this with our contacts in Intel and we'll make sure to send any feedback and concerns upstream to Intel.
Apart from Plundervolt which is discussed in this thread, another reason to disable Voltage Offset might be the relocation of the voltage regulators (CPU FIVR, PCH FIVR) in the new architecture. We have reasons to believe that this have has strongly reduced the gains you can make with voltage offset. In other words: the system might already be working at peak efficiency by default. This might warrant further discussion in the future, perhaps when Intel is launching their Tiger Lake "H" series designs (still under NDA). If you have any unique insight on this topic, feel free to share your information in the comments below or via PM.
What we can confirm is that the lowest Idle power consumption of TGL-UP3 has been greatly reduced compared to previous generations. It's now between 3 and 6W in all of the Tiger Lake systems we're currently launching where their Comet Lake (CML) predecessors were usually more like in the 10W ballpark.

Q: Any plans for a 4K resolution screen?
A: No plans right now. SCHENKER VISION 15 is fixed to deliver a very specific Full-HD Touch Displays with very high brightness and low weight and power consumption. There will be only that one panel - so there isn't going to be a panel lottery like with other brands. We do understand the demand for higher resolutions and we are seeking to be part of the push for high-DPI panels in appropriate form factors in the future. When we picked the new family name for this product, we thought of VISION to be not only our most forward-looking series in the SCHENKER portfolio but also to include products that have stunning visuals. I can already say that 2021 is going to be an exciting year on that front.

Q: How repair-friendly is VISION 15?
A: VISION 15 has seven (7) Torx T6 screws in the bottom cover. The choice for T6 is final as it provides more torque, leading to stronger build-quality without risking wear and tear (i.e. stripped screwheads). We are currently debating whether we should include a free Torx T6 screwdriver with every sold VISION 15. But you can also get them in any PC-centric screwdriver set.
Once you remove the 7 screws, the bottom lid opens very easily. You have access to the Battery, Wi-Fi module and the PCI-Express SSD. At that point you can also clean the fans and heatsinks with canned air.
Removing the mainboard will be very easy as well, requiring you to remove the SSD, Wi-Fi module, 5 ribbon cables and 7 additional screws. The mainboard comes out with the fans and heatsinks still attached as one solid unit.
The LPDDR4x memory is famously soldered on-board. That's why we opt to not offer any configurations below 16GB at launch. LPDDR4x is highly efficient and only available in BGA form. The efficiency helps with thermals and battery life, so it's actually a worthwhile trade-off.
Our cooperation with Intel on XMG FUSION 15 has convinced us that Intel is extremely efficient in their internal RMA handling. We will be able to buy spare parts directly from Intel's factory, but every barebone (minus SSD) will be able to be replaced in Intel's logistics hubs in Europe with zero turnover (Advanced Warranty Replacement, AWR) and very little communication overhead. Having such a strong partner in the back makes it even easier for us to offer our 48h warranty service to end-customers.

Q: How is the keyboard layout going to look like? What function keys do you have?
A: An overview over the German keyboard can be found here. We will offer 25 different keyboard layout at launch - a list can be found here.
VISION 15 continues our recent tradition to offer FnLock - so you can chose between having Fn functions or F keys as the primary input for the top row. Intel also implemented PageUp/Down/Home/End functions on the cursor keys which is something we have done on many of our recent models as well.
Full list:
Key Fn Function
Esc FnLock
F1 Standby
F2 Audio Mute
F3 Audio Down
F4 Audio Up
F5 Microphone Mute

Arrow → End
One item is still missing on the pictures: Fn+Ctrl will be 'Context Menu' key. This should come in one of the next firmware updates and the icon will be printed on the keyboard if we get the firmware early enough.

We are looking forward to your feedback!

2020.11.18 10:02 RainSpectreX A Very Long, Extremely Complicated Rewrite of Dual Destinies (The Monstrous Turnabout)

The Monstrous Turnabout is probably one of the most frustrating cases in Ace Attorney, if I have to be frank.
Japanese occultism has long been a rich source for Japanese mystery fiction, in part because the inherently disturbing and lurid subject matter is great for a "horrific" kill and for exploring complex reasons for murder. AA had already used it itself with Reunion and Bridge, with the Fey clan exploring rather grisly murders that involved spirits and murders in dark houses, with a dark family drama behind the scenes. The Monstrous Turnabout had the full potential to be even more of that, with new angles of a town which believes in a dark spirit, and a horrifying locked room murder said to have been committed by a yokai.
Which makes it all the more disappointing when the actual case has almost none of that. Rather, what The Monstrous Turnabout is an almost comically mundane story about how a rich asshole attempts to enact a pointlessly convoluted plot to obtain wealth he doesn't even need purely out of arrogance, with the most important plot points including things such as a town merger and, of all things, a pro wrestler. All the yokai elements are entirely pointless, with stuff such as Mayor Tenma faking possession coming off as just childishly cringe-inducing and nonsensical. And the mystery itself is possibly the worst in the series, spending the majority of its time wasting away on a nonsensical and shaky argument about who dressed up as Tenma Taro before that plot point is wholesale dismissed, with the trick actually being even dumber.
So we need to change all that, retaining the few redeeming qualities, and create something workable from it. Soooo...let's do that.
~~~
Unlike the previous case, which was basically a straight summary of a short case, here we have to go through a variety of pointers.
For starters, let's get some setting details out of the way first. All cases from here on out is set in Plain Meadows, a section of the country noted for its immense agricultural and clean developmental industries, and is also where where Apollo, Clay and Athena all grew up. This, neatly, helps give the story some connective tissue on the various locations travelled to, and thus helps the story as a whole.
Next, since we're cutting out the...absolutely baffling and overly convoluted original murder plan, there's no real point in having there be two towns, one of which we never even see, so let's par that down to just the one, Tenma Town, a traditional old town steeped in its local legends surrounding Tenma Taro and his enemy of the Nine-Tailed Fox.
Lastly, since she wasn't in the first case, I think it make more or less the most sense to introduce Juniper here. Her role is more or less upgraded to "constant ally who is the focus of a specific case" (in the way Ray was in Investigations 2), so introducing her here makes structural sense. How that works will be given later.
~~
First Investigation
Next off, the new setup. Here, Apollo has been invited to check out Tenma Town by Trucy, who herself has been invited to the festival in three days by Jinxie. There's no Amazing Nine Tails or merger protests in this version, so no "Yokai craze" here, it's just a town which the Tenma's have been the community leaders of for generations.
The five subjects of the mystery each make themselves known at the start. Jinxie and Mayor Tenma are completely unchanged, and Filch is working as their house-keeper but is otherwise completely unchanged. The other two, though, need some more explaining:
Due to an open invitation, Jinxie let's Apollo and Trucy sleep in the Tenma home's guest room (Cue Apollo getting teased, because Apollo is always being teased). In the middle of the night, however, they're woken up to the sound of Filch screaming, only to find the door has been locked from the outside. After Trucy picks the lock (being a magician apparently gives you all kinds of talents), they rush downstairs to the living room, where they find Jinxie and L'Belle in a room that has been completely trashed with feathers and bloody tracks, including a very conspicuous puddle from the sealed door to the shrine of the village "demon" Tenma Taro. Tenma then shows up with a splitting head injury, almost collapsing, but successfully opens the door with the key on his personage...revealing Kyubi dead inside.
~~
Like in the original game, Tenma is arrested, yet again because he's the only one seemingly able to "crack" the locked room puzzle. Trucy pushes for Apollo to take the case as a favour to Jinxie, and while Apollo believes him to be innocent the evidence is not exactly in their favour (not that that's unusual). Trucy's the main investigation partner for this case, more or less operating on the idea of each case focusing on one of the specific people in Apollo's life, more or less.
Fulbright like the actual game debuts at the crime scene, but due to 1. Ema not having temporarily vanished off the face of the earth and 2. The vastly different nature of the endgame reveal, his character is slightly altered. While he still acts like a goofy idiot who screams JUSTICE every few lines, he's far more hostile towards defence attorney's, considering them people who blindly defend criminals, in marked contrast to Ema's far more reasonable view, and as a result is much harder to work with. It's clear Ema doesn't get along with him, because evidently Ema is just constantly stuck working with people she can't stand.
The majority of the investigation is basic information, so let's go over all the stuff not yet mentioned:
Lastly, to tick off, is the interactions with the "main" group, which is mostly just fluff of Clay trying to be supportive (especially since he's never met the Wright's) and Apollo bonding with Athena. Juniper, however, is seen is seen briefly in town looking for some flowers, but right now has yet to make a "formal" debut.
If anyone's asking, Phoenix is still around, he's just being vague and mysterious mentor man.
~~
First Trial
First off, like in the actual game, this is where Blackquill in introduced. He's the one character in the rewrite who is basically completely unaltered in terms of role (even the characters returning from the previous game), but in a very minor tweak he more noticeably never makes a demeaning comment to Athena. This fixes one of the really bad ways AA5 "cheats", hiding any real hint towards Athena and Simon's true relationship (despite it being the most important one in the story) in the name of making the twist a "surprise".
Fulbright starts off with the basic facts. Kyubi was found dead in the locked shrine, stabbed to death with a ceremonial spear found in the chamber room (here on the first floor). Pre-mortem he had sustained a violent head injury and considerable physical bruising, which Fulbright reasons was due to a fight in the chamber room with Tenma. The motive, Fulbright gives, is that a phot was found in the victims possession of Tenma's late wife, implying some kind of connection to her, and that this lead to a confrontation that ended in murder.
This is shot down with the evidence that a violent altercation occurred in the foyer, with marks indicating a spear was stabbed repeatedly into a wall. This leads to the first witness being called to the stand. Not Filch, but L'Belle.
L'Belle says that he was in the living room on the night of the murder when he heard the sound someone breaking into the Tenma residence, which he then frightened off. This, however, is thrown into question about the fact that no one was picked up on the security camera, and L'Belle's testimony is slowly dissected as he claims he heard someone somehow fleeing into the living room and upstairs, revealing that there must have been two people in the building that night, and residents, at that. Furthermore, L'Belle was able to knab an item from one of them, and it confirms their identity instantly. Filch!
Filch is called up to the stand next, and proceeds to get on everyone's nerves by being an absolutely terrible witness, lying, backtracking on points and generally refusing to admit to even basic things. After much annoyance (which includes Blackquill actually helping with a bit of manipulation tactics, demonstrating for the first time that he's genuinely a good person), Filch eventually admits to the reason he and his accomplice were doing what they were doing, they were planning to kidnap Jinxie with a cloth big enough to wrap a human being in, though he refuses to say why on earth he was doing that. Apollo plays rule of elimination, and realizes there's only one other person who could fit into that plan, the victim, Rex Kyubi.
This is perplexing on multiple reasons, namely that L'Belle claimed the other person fled up the stairs. Apollo, preforming a turnabout on his logic, deduces that this doesn't contradict anything, because Kyubi was killed upstairs. The killer stabbed him dead, used the kidnapping cloth to help move the body without getting blood everywhere, then threw the body down the stairs, hence the physical bruising. This, however, plays Apollo into a corner, as Blackquill reveals that this essentially has made it so that no one but Tenma could be the killer. Whoops.
Apollo, backed into a corner, decides to take the risk and asks Filch what he saw after he hid in the living room. Filch is initially incredibly obstinate (with Athena noticing his voice is nothing but genuine fear at this point) until Blackquill gets him to fess up. Filch admits everything Apollo said is true, and he was in the living room at the time of the murder.
While he was hiding in the living room, however, Filch saw something horrifying.
The image of Tenma Taro, walking slowly into the room, dragging the bloody corpse of Kyubi behind him, before suddenly opening the shrine door.
Filch admits seeing this is what caused him to run away in fear, and he seems genuinely convinced this was the towns deity coming down to punish him for trying to kidnap Jinxie. As he fled, Tenma Taro suddenly went berserk, trashing the entire living room in blind fury, seemingly not even looking at him. When Filch returned, he found the room a mess of feathers and destroyed objects...with L'Belle cradling an unconscious Jinxie in his arms.
Filch suddenly starts screaming that Tenma Taro is going to kill him and has to be restrained. With almost the fundamental premises of the case being changed, the trial is forcibly concluded on a point of utter confusion.
~~
Second Investigation
The second investigation starts with Apollo voice practicing until Trucy and Athena show up. He's left struggling to figure out how to proceed with the case, having been given two major leads, the Tenma Taro Filch saw, and the attempted kidnapping of Jinxie. As Trucy points out, though, it's not worth worrying, they just need to find what they need until the truth comes out.
Once the party arrives at Tenma Town, however, they learn from Ema something shocking, Filch has gone missing. After he was released from questioning (apparently he successfully convinced the police he was threatened into helping), he returned to Tenma Town, only to mysteriously vanish. The police are hot on the trails of trying to figure out what happened to him, to the detriment of other aspects of the investigation, but no one is able to figure out what's going on. Ema says she unfortunately can't continue aiding Team Apollo, but lends them some luminol as a "special gift".
After a little walking, the trio run into Clay, who explains he's been asking around in case anything important comes up. He reveals an important piece of information, there's word about Tenma Taro wandering the town at night, attacking people who go near him. It's looking more and more like the town is genuinely haunted.
More importantly, this is Juniper's formal introduction, accomplished through a literal chance encounter. It's initially just an "oh" interaction, up until Athena recognizes her, and the atmosphere goes cold. Like their reunion in the actual game, it's clear things are somewhat awkward due to the amount of time since they last met, only that's going to be actually important here.
~~
Arriving outside the Tenma residence, the trio find L'Belle and Jinxie, the former of whom is talking with the police about Filch's disappearance. Jinxie, though, is convinced she knows the answer, demons. It appears her delusions are getting worse since her father's arrest, with L'Belle saying he had to give her sedatives just so she didn't completely destroy the house (it's made clear Jinxie got her fathers physical strength). She's convinced that Filch, like her mother, was spirited away by the demon Tenma Taro, who is soon to destroy Tenma Town and all who live there.
Trucy is understandably upset over seeing her best friend in such a state, and keeps pushing for the investigation. First off, L'Belle exposition time:
~~
The inside of the building is still being investigated by Fulbright, who is obstinate as ever, but Athena successfully manages to get him to leave with a quick lie, enabling them to investigate the house without having to deal with him.
First, the study, which was conspicuously the only room left unlocked that night. Some luminol use reveals a huge bloodstain on the floor which was wiped, along with a ceremonial statue of of Tenma Taro. This, for all intents and purposes, proves the murder occurred in the study.
Next, Filch's room, which Trucy gets into by, again, picking the lock. Inside, they find hidden under his bed a horde of neat paperwork, suggesting Filch was much smarter than he let on. Going through the documents, they find it detailing some kind of agreement about the "Tenma Faith Project", which Apollo is able to identify as some kind of money laundering scheme. There's also a recent new letter about a plan to kidnap Jinxie and make her a new "figurehead", though the sheer amount of business speak in the rest of the files makes it almost impossible to figure out what that means
Eventually, the trio stumble upon one very crucial image, a horde of people praying in front of a statue of Tenma Taro, with Kyubi there...and whom Trucy figures out is Yami Tenma.
Seems like someone has to explain his story a touch.
~~
At the detention center, Apollo sits down in front of Tenma, and begins interrogating him. Even if he believes the Mayor is innocent, he still needs answers.
Tenma admits, seeing these, he can tell the truth at a moments notice. Filch and Kyubi were working together to take advantage of the towns faith, scamming people into donating money to their "protector" which they profited off of. He can also tell exactly what the kidnapping plan was for, an attempt to start it all over again, using Jinxie's similar personality to her mother to make her a new figurehead for their schemes. Tenma curses that he even let the two near his daughter, saying that, regardless of the truth of their fates, he will never forgive them.
Apollo and Athena notice however that there's something off about his words. Tenma, after a little more pressure, finally cracks, and confirms that he did see something the night of the murder.
Jinxie, standing over Kyubi's corpse.
~~
Team Apollo finally does the important thing, and meets with Jinxie, who is still being cared for by L'Belle. Apollo gets Trucy to handle the talking, feeling that he's not the right person to do it.
Jinxie suddenly turns faint and collapses, apparently due to a lack of proper sleep taking a toll on her physically. The group bring her to bed, where L'Belle tells everyone not to disturb her, before leaving the room to get her "medicine" (implied to really just be more sedatives).
Suddenly, on a whim, Trucy opens up Jinxie's dresser, and something horrifying falls out.
A full body Tenma Taro costume, with feathers and a staff.
Apollo, shocked at what the hell is in there, instantly tells Trucy to stuff that thing back inside before L'Belle gets back. As he's quick to make clear, this is something which is crucial, crucial evidence, and will play and important trump card against the prosecution in finding the truth.
What that truth is, however, is something Apollo could never have expected.
~~
Second Trial
The second trial starts with Apollo getting a phone call from Phoenix. Phoenix can tell Apollo is visibly nervous, but gives him some sage advice on what to do. He then asks how working with Athena is, to which Apollo's only response is "a handful". Phoenix laughs, and then delivers a metaphor about Apollo and Athena comprising the body and mind of the cross-examination. When Apollo asks for a direct answer, Phoenix does the appropriate thing; he hangs up.
Returning to the courtroom, as to be expected, Fulbright and Blackquill state their case that Tenma killed Kyubi, now in the study, then dragged the body down to the shrine. The "Tenma Taro" Filch saw was his imagination. This is strengthened all the more by the blood, which is confirmed to have been that of Kyubi. This places Apollo in a pretty bad position, so he jumps to what is the best option he has, calling Tenma himself to the stand.
Tenma's cross-examination (maybe Mood Matrix) ends up revealing that, indeed, he did hit Kyubi on the head in a moment of anger, knowing in the moment he was going to try and exploit Jinxie, but actually did check if he was dead or no. When realized he wasn't, though, he suffered a violent blow to the head, after which he believes Kyubi was killed.
Apollo successfully manages to reason this, if Kyubi died in the study, then there is no way Tenma could've moved the body, since Tenma had a splitting head injury at the time. The only possible way to solve this contradiction, the killer was a third person. One problem, Tenma locked the door to the study from the inside to prevent Kyubi from running. Apollo proposes another solution there; there must have been another key.
This is when Apollo reveals the trump card, the Tenma Taro costume. Or, more specifically, the staff, which Apollo, with a suggestion from Trucy, reveals doubles as a master key, which is what Filch actually saw ("Tenma Taro" unlocking the shrine entrance with the staff/key). Cue this:
With this, Apollo is about to celebrate a victory, only for Trucy to point out the problem, if Tenma's not the culprit...it seems it was somehow Jinxie.
Jinxie is called up to the stand to testify about the night of the murder, with a testimony that is seemingly incomprehensible. Athena comes to the rescue yet again, as she correctly figures out that, as in the actual game, Jinxie suffers from a form of schizophrenia/somnambulism which causes her to continually walk around at night, believing herself to be Tenma Taro, while heavily hallucinating.
Then, once the Mood Matrix is done, the answer comes out. Jinxie, in her delirium state, read mysterious "instructions" giving her orders, put on the Tenma Taro costume and dragged Kyubi's corpse down the upstairs hallway, threw it down on the first floor, then moved it into the shrine before destroying the living room, before falling unconscious. The declaration causes Jinxie to crack, and she genuinely seems to agree with the assertion, having a genuine breakdown. Apollo realizes he's genuinely proven his client innocent. Only it's coming at the cost of punishing his daughter, and Trucy's best friend.
Apollo calls an objection, saying the trials not over until they've gone through everything, and says there's now one glaring hole, if Jinxie collapsed after moving the body, where did the Tenma Taro costume go? Apollo answers that it was removed and hidden by the person who was with her at the scene; Florent L'Belle.
~~
During the recess, Ema calls to reveal something important, they've found Filch. Or, rather, his hat, which was found near a rushing river at the bottom of the cliffside near the Tenma residence. Seems that, whatever happened, he is now very, very dead. Either way, with this important piece of testimony, L'Belle takes the stand.
L'Belle is naturally questiong as to why he's here, to which Apollo tells him he should know why. Unless he has a good explanation, he is the one who covered up the crime. L'Belle acts fast and lose, first playing dumb, then claiming he was just trying to protect Jinxie. The point however leads into how he knew that the costume was hers, and to return it to her room, to which he gives an explanation, he was the one who designed it, having originally made it to be worn in ceremony by Yami.
This, if anything, makes L'belle more suspicious, as he was the only one who knew about the costume and, more importantly, the key on the staff, which would enable him to get into the study and kill Kyubi! This causes L'belle to suddenly go into a sweating fit, seemingly collapsing...
L'belle suddenly gets up, most of his make-up missing, and completes his transformation as he takes off his jacket to reveal his garb of a Tenma Taro worshipper underneath. He starts speaking like a cultist, yelling that Tenma Taro will cast his wrath on everyone in the courtroom (The Judge genuinely seems to believe this will happen), and that the killer, Jinxie is his worldly manifestation.
The climax cross-examination begins, with L'belle making the argument that there's no way of showing how he could've committed the murder. This is proven wrong by the locked doors upstairs, which Apollo deduces were done so to remove the chance of Jinxie going the wrong way. Once L'belle killed Kyubi, he moved the body to Jinxie's room, then hid in the study until Jinxie had moved the body. Once she had collapsed after wrecking the living room, he went there, removed the costume, hid it in a box, then returned it to Jinxie's room when he went to notify the police.
L'belle snaps that there's still no way to prove anyone but "Tenma Taro" (Jinxie) was involved, to which Apollo dismisses that with the proof of the "message" Jinxie was given, which has no mention of breaking into the study. L'belle says all this is conjecture, not hard evidence, to which Apollo then presents Filch's hat. Filch was pushed off a cliff to his doom in the middle of the day, when Jinxie's "Tenma Taro" delusion would be inactive. L'belle must've aimed to kill him because he knew there was a danger that Filch's testimony could rip his to shreads.
L'belle, backed into a corner, uses his final trump card, and convinces Tenma to admit to seeing Jinxie kill Kyubi. It seems like all seems lost...then something clicks in Apollo's head.
You know what time it is!
~~
Florent L'Belle is the one who killed Rex Kyubi. However, according to Mayor Tenma, he saw Jinxie kill the victim. If we want to figure out this discrepancy, we need to ask, why exactly did Mayor Tenma say he saw his daughter?
--> Because of something he could identify.
Mayor Tenma has said he could tell at a glance it was Jinxie, but not how he could tell it was her. With that in mind, what was the other reason why he said it was impossible for the murder to have happened?
--> He had locked the study door.
When he went to confront the victim, Mayor Tenma locked the room from the inside. Despite this, without breaking the door itself, the room opened for the killer to enter. How exactly did the killer enter the room?
--> The Tenma Taro costume.
The Tenma Taro costume has a master key hidden on its staff. This means that, when the killer entered the study, they were dressed as Tenma Taro! Who was the person hiding inside the Tenma Taro costume then?
--> Florent L'Belle
L'BELLE WAS WEARING THE TENMA TARO COSTUME
~~
After giving his conclusions, L'Belle asks for proof, to where Apollo gives the final lynchpin, the unnaturally torn seams of the costume. These were made because someone taller that the expected size, proving someone had to have worn the costume other than Jinxie, and even knew the costume existed!
"Demons...demons everywhere..."
L'Belle suddenly starts talking like Jinxie on steroids, claiming literally everyone is a demon trying to claim his soul. His mind seems to have completely collapsed, reducing him to a jibbering lunatic.
Tenma suddenly arrives at the stand, questioning why on earth he did this. L'Belle reveals, in about as coherent language as he can use, his entire motive was, in a sense, revenge. While going through Filch's things on a whim, he stumbled upon Filch's notes about his and Kyubi's old plans. He says that Kyubi and Filch were the men who ruined Yami, so they deserved to die. He forged letters giving each other the plan to kidnap Jinxie to make her a new figurehead, then let everything play out from there. He broke up the meeting in the foyer, sacred Filch off, then waited for the inevitable heated confrontation between Tenma and Kyubi to play out before knocking Tenma out and killing Kyubi. The rest was just having Jinxie "fulfill" her role as Tenma Taro.
Tenma asks why, if this was for Yami, then why did L'Belle frame him? L'Belle reveals the other thing he found, a photo of Damian confronting Yami on the night of her death. L'Belle claims that Tenma murdered his wife in cold blood due to her beliefs. Apollo, though, with a single contradiction, however, proves he was actually trying to save his wife, which Tenma, after a pause confirms is indeed exactly what happened. Yami, after becoming convinced she was some kind of vessel for Tenma Taro, choose to "sacrifice" herself. Tenma attempted to save his wife from her madness, but was powerless as she fell off the cliff. To this day he's not sure if she did it intentionally or if it were an accident, but the guilt has haunted him ever since. The guilt both that he failed to save his wife, and that Jinxie lost her mother to his weakness.
L'Belle screams that it's all everyone else's fault, and that the only thing which matters is Tenma Taro, his worthy emissary Yami Tenma, and her child Jinxie, who carries Tenma Taro inside of her.
Blackquill, meanwhile, has had enough.
L'Belle suddenly gets on his hands and knees and desperately confesses to everything over and over. Everyone just watches as he's dragged away, having lost his mind in a delusion.
~~
After Tenma is declared not guilty, the aftermath section begins with Jinxie on her hands and knees, thanking the WAA over and over again for how much they've done for her. Trucy eventually manages to tell her that it's not needed, since Apollo was just doing his job, but Jinxie is still in an emotional high.
Tenma finally leaves the courthouse, looking more relieved than anyone relived than anything else. He'd lived with the secret of what occurred with Yami's death for five years. He had no idea of what drove her to take her own life like that, but Athena has an answer; a completely untreated variant of Jinxie's schizophrenic disorder, which she notes runs in families (this is more or less true, BTW). Athena says she knows some good treatments, and is sure Jinxie will be able to improve with them.
Tenma admits he never told Jinxie the truth, because he feared the truth. He feared that, if he told her, she would end up like her mother, lost in a delusion. That fear, perhaps, was one which gripped him even greater than her imaginary fear of Yokai, because what he feared was a reality terrifying to any parent, losing their child.
Jinxie tells her father that, no matter what, she forgives him, because he was always trying to protect her. She thanks the WAA for letting the truth to come to light, because now she feels she doesn't have to be afraid (this is where the smiling animation happens). Cue Daddy Tenma crying manly tears.
Suddenly, the group see Blackquill being lead out of the courtroom by Fulbright. Apollo is naturally uneasy about being even remotely close to a convicted murderer...only for the wham line to come in.
Apollo is baffled to what the hell is up with that interaction, only for her reaction (and a disapproving look from Trucy) to tell him it's best not to present it. Lastly, Apollo finally presents the sunflowers to the Tenma's. As Jinxie reveals, they were the type her mother cultivated herself, and are the proof of her memory. Tenma vows that, no matter what, he will make Tenma Town a better place, in her memory.
In front of sunflowers, father and daughter smile.
2020.11.17 23:20 Wuartz I would like to see some changes to gameplay in Ace Attorney 7
I'm really excited to know that Ace Attorney 7 is in development. And I think it's time that the series expanded and evolved it's gameplay.
Sure, I like the visual novel style, but after playing the Persona series, I thought of how nice it would be to control Phoenix and move around in a 3D environment. Like in Ace Attorney Investigations, but even greater. Here's a list of things I would like:
I think these changes will help modernize the series and make it more exciting and involving to play.
Also unrelated, I hope the next protagonist is Trucy Wright, fresh out of law school, with Phoenix and Athena (and Apollo, later in the story) as partners.
mortal parent Fernando Quinn Lake 37 years old He is a meteorologist. He was fresh out of college when made to raise a child after a two-night-stand on a boat. He is Storm's father. He tried to raise Storm to the best of his ability, but even parents can have their limits. Storm thinks it would be better if they spent time apart.
description: People have, more often than not, mistaken Storm for a statue. Their quote-unquote chiselled features are usually the driving reason for this sort of pun, but others claim that Storm has this talent for staying still for prolonged periods of time. It's like Storm was built to be immortalised--or so they say. The fact is, though, Storm does have a sort of resting smoulder, the antithesis to the resting bitch face. The former is the sort of state where Storm tucks their chin down a touch and trains their hazel gaze on whatever is in their immediate front. It took years of training to achieve this sort of stare, but Storm is just glad that they can stand still for that long.
equipment: Storm has several belongings to their name, and several other belongings not to their name--
  • chakram; Storm has at their disposal several means of defence, but Celestial bronze discs are the most fun to play around with. Storm has spent years of experimenting and training to figure out various fighting styles with this pair, but they've taken to using these in place of throwing knives--following the suggestion of a YouTube video.
  • gloves; To mitigate the effects of some of Storm's abilities, they wear a set of gloves they found in a thrift-store (after disinfecting the pair, of course). The freed fingers allow for a just-in-case sort of moment, though. They never know when someone needs a pinching.
  • starlight mints; Storm has a fascination with these little sweets. They don't understand what exactly has driven these circular bundles of red and white candy to present themself at every Chinese restaurant take-out counter, but they are grateful for them nonetheless. Exactly why starlight is the name for these mints, however, is another matter entirely.
  • choker; These necklaces were a nice find from a while back. Admittedly, they have, at one point or another, made it a lot harder for Storm to fight so they only wear these on off-days.
  • bucket hat; This hat was a gift. Well, it was a gift from Storm to themself. They swiped this from a high-end store in New York. That's a story best left for another day.
abilities
power one; weather manipulation aka atmokinesis -- wub wub wub
Storm is capable of manipulating water and air into generating, well, storms. This power works best at sea or over typically large bodies of water but is considerably weaker on a clear day. These storms take a great deal of energy out of... Storm, lasting only up to five minutes in ideal conditions. Any storm generated over land would be considerably weaker--at best, summoning of a thunderclap or a dark cloud. In total, however, they can only summon up to three storms a day with at least an hour's rest in between.
power two; poison manipulation aka toxikinesis -- ouchie
Storm is capable of producing a very mild toxin best akin to that of cnidarians such as jellyfish. Should they dig any one of their sharp nails into another's body, the toxin would seep into their system and temporarily hinder the movement of that body part/organ system. The effect operates on a 1-10 scale, wherein each point indicates the number of nails. One nail would leave a sharp burst of paint, five difficulties in joint movement, and ten loss in nerve-function/numbing of the affected body part. Storm would be dehydrated in an attempt to reproduce the lost toxins and can pass out themself if all ten fingernails are to transfer the toxin. This may or may not mean that they are also immune to cnidarian stings. (This effect can be undone with wee.)
power three; bioluminescence -- ooh ahh
Storm is capable of light-generation. This light cannot be manipulated, only amplified when enough salts and electrolytes have been consumed. This ability is activated if Storm a) has sustained a major blow, b) is under the cover of night or intense darkness, and c) is doused in water. The light manifests similarly to glow-in-the-dark tattoos, the colour changing with their mood.
skillset: Storm has acquired an odd assortment of knowledge and skills which includes but is not limited to-- lock-picking. Since bobby pins are quickly becoming a luxury resource, Storm tries their best to get the practice in. They don't want to get trapped in any grocery stores or gas station bathrooms again. This tends to go nicely with Storm's tendency to pickpocket and/or shoplift circular objects. Their fascination with the shape carries into the proud talent of drawing perfect circles without the need for compasses or protractor. (Some people are just born lucky.) They also have an interest in sculpting and pottery, the sorts of arts that need dirty hands. Taking care of these hands is vital to their survival, of course, so skincare routines are practically instinct at this point.
personality
theme song: there is a light that never goes out by the smiths motif: kai's agni kai
Storm likes to think of themself as this stoic icon, a statue among mortals.
The reality is, though, that they are a huge nerd. Storm's travel bag is filled with trinkets from their travels, keychains and refrigerator magnets, even stickers of characters from different TV shows. One needs only to ask for them to go on about the life story of Sophia Petrillo ("Picture it, Sicily 1912."), even if the original question was whether or not they paid for the merchandise. To that original question, Storm would remark that they only steal the circles and quickly run away.
Access to the fun side of the Internet--which Storm believes to include stuff such as Farmville and BuzzFeed--was limited to half-hour sessions on the weekend, leaving the teenager to jump into the world of non-digital media. They grew up listening to audiobooks of the Hardy Boys, following the panelled adventures of the X-Men, and watching Sir David Attenborough navigate the wonders of nature. They may not know a lot about TikTok or Tumblr, but they can set the record function on the DVR without consulting the manual.
That being said, Storm's struggle with reading writing, in general, has driven them to remember. They take their time to commit the day and key details to memory, often shutting out the world in order to sort thought and memory into something more manageable. They don't have a photographic memory, no, but they're unlikely to forget. An elephant never forgets, or so that's what they say. By they, Storm means themself, of course.
At the end of it all, Storm does try to keep their stoic face together, and they do it pretty well. Their emotions are not that easily gleaned from facial expressions alone. They learned a long time ago to keep themself in check, especially when it comes to their actions and emotions. Rigidity is not easy; it's quite hard in fact. And, it needs a lot of practice.
backstory
For most of Storm's life, it was just them and their father, and his lady friends.
Fernando was upfront with Storm's mother early on. When other kids would have gotten The Talk about the birds and the bees, and those in between, Storm was told about Poseidon and the gorgon, and the sword in her neck. (In hindsight, the story about one of their grandfather's sexcapades was a pretty morbid introduction into the demigod world.)
They first arrived at Camp Half-Blood some three or so years ago, arriving at different times of the year for different reasons. The first ("Picture them, Storm 2017.") was a courtesy call, a suggestion by their father to check the place out at the prompting of one of his co-workers, a satyr. The second (Storm: Age 14) was a result of Storm's first time running away. So was the third, and now the fourth.
Honestly, the details of these stories are best left to memory.
now
There's a very small list of things Storm wouldn't do for one of Mrs. Lin's mints right now or any version of those peppermint swirls.
They ran out of those little bites of heaven about three towns ago when they almost got caught swiping both a bowlful of mints and the actual bowl from Master Cho's Palace. After that, Storm thought it would have been good to lay low. They never did know who was watching, and there is always someone watching, or so people say.
Hands dig through pants pockets, even if these pants, in particular, have little in the way of storage space. Storm knows that there's nothing bar a wallet, of course. They just need something to hold on to.
Their teeth grind together as they trudge down the hill. (Neither Peleus nor the Athena Parthenos had one either, much to their dismay.) A small cloud starts to come together over their head, the blue flecks in their eyes suddenly electric. Storm has no idea why this day has suddenly taken a turn for the worse, but they swear it would get better if they could just get their hands on a fucking mint.
Their trajectory is angled straight for the Big House because, surely, Chiron or Argus, or someone would have one. (They should also probably check-in and drop off their bags. But, that can be taken care of later.)
2020.11.16 11:12 RainSpectreX A Very Long, Extremely Complicated Rewrite of Dual Destinies (Turnabout Countdown)
The Monstrous Turnabout, Turnabout ???
If you're confused about the title change, don't worry, this is just for clarities stake.
So, anyway, it seems I got some pretty decent feedback regarding the Apollo Justice part of the Apollo Trilogy "Retrial" as I like to call it, the attempt to reconstruct what a coherent, properly connected version of the series second "trilogy" would look like.
Unfortunately, there's a wee little problem we run into. Unlike Apollo Justice, which was relatively easier to fix due much of the building blocks for a much better story being there, Dual Destinies is far harder to properly fix, for quite a lot of reasons I may add:
So, in essence, what I'm essentially stuck with is trying to unpack the "quality" aspects out of an incredibly poorly planned, unfocused script, picking on the character and story aspects which are genuinely good, and also having to work with several crucial changes in direction meant to refocus the narrative and not make it feel like an isolated attempt towards desperate "course correction", and instead a continuation of the previous instalment.
This is going to be...complicated, so to speak. We're going to be going case by case here, each posing new positions, solutions and conclusions. This, in a way, is almost not a rewrite. It's more a semi-constructed fanfic born out of remodelling AA5's scenario.
Remember also that this is following from my Apollo Justice rewrite, so Thalassa and Valant are dead thanks to crazy man Kristoph, there was no Jurist system, Apollo and Trucy are mutually aware they're half-siblings but agreed not to discuss it until it feels truly appropriate, Klavier and Apollo have a much stronger friendship, and Vera is in Klavier's care because of guilt on the latter.
With that...let's see how this goes.
~~~
We open on New Years Eve. At this time, a trial is being held for a very specific man.
That man is Kristoph Gavin, the formerly respected defence attorney who fell from grace in perhaps the most spectacular downfall in the history of the courts. A single man, who was known as a genius by so many, revealed as a serial killer and a psychotic madman.
When questioned with the nature of his crimes, however, Kristoph just laughs.
"Why should I feel your judgement, Your Honour? After all...I'm the most evil man in the world."
Suddenly a warning is made. A bomb is about to go off, and soon.
A hurry of people attempt to flee the courtroom in a panic, but Kristoph just stands there, his face unchanging.
The courtroom is engulfed in a ball of flame.
~~
Apollo is preparing for trial with what he always does, voice practice. Joining with him is the defendant, not Juniper here, but Clay, here a full member of the main cast. Clay is Apollo's best friend since they were kids, the two of them having been through thick and thin together, and is an astronaut in training whose just returned from training overseas (explaining why he wasn't in Apollo Justice). He's even more hot-blooded than Apollo, and seems always determined to strive forwards no matter what, in contrast to Apollo's insecurities (for those who've played Danganronpa, think Shuichi and Kaito, it's a similar dynamic). Oh, and Trucy's there too, of course.
Apollo explains to the two of them that Phoenix, who remains as just an advisor for "personal reasons", has told him a new legal assistant is arriving to assist in the case, and that she's going to be Apollo's "partner" in the journey forwards. That assistant is, of course, Athena, here not officially a lawyer yet, but bursting with energy. Her sheer enthusiasm is enough to make Apollo regain his composure, and get ready to fight. Clay, however, seems less enthusiastic, foreshadowing from the start that Athena used to be at GYAXA.
~~
The case starts out with Ema (who is in this version, and still not a forensics scientist, sorry girl) laying out what happened. During Kristoph's new trial, an explosive went off that utterly destroyed the courtroom. In the aftermath of the blast, two bodies were found by bomb disposal expert Ted Tonate, detective Candice Arme and a body burnt to the point of unrecognizability, but is believed to be Kristoph based on the handcuffs. Clay is the suspect as Tonate found him in the aftermath of the explosion, suspecting he'd come there to steal something in the courtroom.
According to Clay, while he was there at the scene of the bombing, he was only there to retrieve a note that had been taken as evidence in Kristoph's trial, saying that it was "important" for him and Apollo. He only knew about Kristoph through what Apollo told him, he never even met the guy.
The questions begin as Apollo asks Ema how the bomb got into the courthouse. Like in the actual game, the bomb was smuggled into the courtroom via a promotional plush. Apparently, before Kristoph's trial, the courthouse had gotten a bomb threat, leading to Tonate being assigned to the courtroom that day as bomb technician. After this information is given, Tonate is called in to testify.
The questioning begins with the most basic point, how exactly did Tonate know a bomb was going off in the courthouse? Tonate says that he had prior to the bombing he'd wired the courtroom so to catch any explosives in the building. The bomb has been secretly entered into the courtroom from the evidence room, and was reactivated mid-trial via remote.
Tonate trips up, however, when he claims Detective Arme was testifying when the bomb went off, despite the photo showing nothing of the sort. This begins the slow unravelling of the case as it's proven Detective Arme in fact wasn't even in the courtroom at the time of the bombing, raising the question of how she even died in there. Tonate amends his testimony and reveals Arme didn't die in the blast, she'd actually had gone into the courtroom to investigate the explosion and was murdered inside, which Tonate argues was the doing of Clay.
This leads into Clay testifying what he did in the destroyed courtroom, leading into the introduction of the Mood Matrix and its mechanics. Since in this version today is literally the first time Apollo and Athena have met, there's more weight given to Athena's powers and their use, rather than it just kinda...existing like in the original.
The results of the cross-examination reveals that Clay was looking for the notes on Apollo's background that suggested Kristoph had an ulterior motive for making him his student. Apollo is shocked to hear this, but Clay is oddly evasive about why he knew this was a thing. He fled though when he heard footsteps, but didn't see anyone on the way out. This, naturally, exposes what Tonate said as a lie.
Heading back up on stand, Tonate acts continually difficult as Apollo starts pushing that he murdered Arme himself, while Tonate just claims endlessly that Clay is lying. Of course, Apollo stands by his best friend, and through more or less similar deductions to the original game, deduces that Arme's body was stuffed inside the disposal crate, and then placed there after the bombing with the intent to frame Clay.
This, however, opens up the final phase, trying to prove Tonate did it. The obvious first question being "why". Apollo is left stumped on this...until he thinks it over, and then proves a shocking fact; Kristoph's hand scar is absent from the burnt body found in the courtroom, meaning only one conclusion. It's not him. The burnt body was actually a dupe meant to fool people into thinking Kristoph died in the bombing, while the real Kristoph made his escape.
Tonate suddenly snaps and says he has no motive to "save" Kristoph, no one does. Apollo's powers however kick in as he not and, after a bit more pressing, he comes through to the second twist, the "Ted Tonate" in the trial isn't Tonate at all, but an imposter working to break Kristoph out, as proven by his nervous tick revealing his neck to have no scarring (here, Tonate's use of his text-to-speech is from having his vocal cords damaged in the past, so it actually has an explanation and isn't just a random "wacky" quirk which the Yamazaki-3DS games feel enamoured with).
Everything seems to fit into place, except for one question, how the hell is there a burnt corpse in the courtroom when seemingly everyone in the courtroom at the time is accounted for. Which, well, leads to the best part of the Yamazaki-3DS games (which I'm baffled aren't in the first cases), the Brain Blast!
~~
The victims of the case were Detective Candice Arme and the man on trial at the time, Kristoph Gavin. This, however, turned out to be a lie. Gavin's body wasn't actually his. Why exactly did this happen?
--> To fake Gavin's death.
Right, the true killers motive was to help Gavin escape by detonating the bomb. In order to do this, what exactly did the killer do?
--> Impersonated Ted Tonate.
The killer, after sending a bomb threat, attacked and killed Detective Arme, then took the identity of the bomb specialist Ted Tonate. This was done before the bombing in order to prepare for the plan. However, we found Detective Arme's body at the scene, alongside the fake body of Gavin. So who was it really?
--> Ted Tonate
THE BURNT BODY WAS THE REAL TONATE
~~
The murder played out thus, ???, once they infiltrated the courtroom, used the explosive they had prepared for the murder (snuck in through the evidence) to beat Arme to death before knocking out Tonate and stealing his clothes, then placing both bodies in the. From there, they ordered the evacuation on a false bomb threat, then, once everyone was out of the room, undid Kristoph's cuffs, got out Tonate's body and placed the cuffs on him, then safely detonated the bomb.
From there, it was child's play. The killer simply waited catch Clay in the process of rummaging through the courthouse, discreetly laid Arme's body out, and accused him in the act. Zero other tactics required.
After the same last ditch gambit with the fake bomb (same as in the actual game), "Tonate" has a vastly scaled back breakdown which concludes on his outfit falling apart, revealing a strange man in a plain white shirt and whispy hair.
Before the mysterious man's face can be seen, he suddenly forces on a featureless black mask.
Yep, this is the rewrites (radically different) version of "The Phantom". He laughs at how he would love to talk, but he feels that there's no room for him in a court of law. He's a mastermind, after all, not a common killer, so the only place for him is somewhere where he is free to act out his part. Before anyone can be called in to restrain him, however, an explosive secretly planted on the roof detonates, creating a hole in the ceiling from which an escape ladder appears. From the sound, evidently a helicopter is here.
With that, the Phantom escapes, leaving the court more baffled than when it started, but Clay an innocent man.
~~
After the trial, Clay expresses how grateful he is to both Apollo and Athena, saying that he would've been a goner without either of them. Apollo asks him about the attempt to retrieve evidence, and Clay reveals a note he was given told him that Kristoph had known about Apollo's powers when he made him his student. He's realized now that that was part of the Phantom's plot, and he was the convenient scapegoat to frame him while letting Kristoph escape.
Phoenix proceeds to turn up, happy to see Athena's first proper experience in court turned out so well. Since this version isn't reverting in terms of character development, Phoenix remains the wise, slightly illusive mentor, even if Apollo understands him better now.
Phoenix tells Apollo that it's good to have people who believe in him, and says that he's sure that will be important soon. He however ominously tells Apollo that he must prepare himself, because the next chapter of his story is beginning, leaving the case off on a mysterious phrase.
"Void Justice is making its first move."

Notes will be included under the post. Monstrous will be up in about a day.

2020.11.15 11:47 Quirky_Rabbit Female investigation assistants ranked by usefulness

Note: providing witness testimony doesn't count.
7: Athena. Has a knack for reading (hearing?) people and solving puzzles. Gets Fulbright's cooperation every time. (The Mood Matrix doesn't count because she only uses it in court - otherwise, her ranking would be much higher.)
6: Trucy. Motivates and encourages the nervous newbie Apollo. Klavier adores her, which gets them into the crime scene in 4-2. The first to spot Lamiroir hiding in the guitar case, which may have saved her life.
5: Rayfa. Reads Khura'inese and translates documents. Provides valuable exposition about the setting. Commands attention and respect by virtue of her station, which Phoenix can take advantage of.
4: Pearl. Able to channel spirits, being a major point in 2-4. Charges the Magatama twice and teaches Phoenix how to use it. Provides the forensicking in 5-DLC.
3: Maya. Directly obtains crucial evidence a few times, often accidentally. Also able to channel spirits, allowing Mia and Dhurke to be partners through her. Gives Phoenix the Magatama.
2: Ema. Grants meaning to many of the most important pieces of evidence in RftA through her testing. Continues to play the Forensics ex Machina in practically all her other appearances.
1: Kay. Half the cases in AAI and AAI2 would be unsolvable without Little Thief. In fact, without her, most of the events of those games wouldn't have happened at all because Edgeworth would still be tied up in a room in Gatewater Land.
I have not played DGS, but I would be interested to know how you would place the assistant/s in as spoiler free a manner as possible.

2020.11.14 02:31 xxarchiboldxx Emily or Elowen?

So my partner and I just welcomed our baby girl into the world this morning, yay! We had 2 names set out for her, but we're both perfectly 50/50 on them both, it's impossible to choose! So we ask your help.
Names are:
Emily Athena Surname
Elowen Lily Surname
Our surname is 2 syllables, starts with Br.
I love Emily Athena because of the combo of delicate girly name and warrior princess name. This is also our "safe choice" as Emily is a lot more common than Elowen.
On the flip side, I love the mystical vibe of Elowen Lily. We wanted a nature name and both Elowen and Lily tick that box. Plus, I love Ellie as a potential nn. But we've been doubting ourselves that Elowen is a little too out there.
So what do you think? Which do you prefer?
Bonus round: Elowen vs Elowyn? Which spelling? I believe Elowen to be the correct form for the Cornish word, but since it's only recently that the word is used as a name, I feel either version is legit.
TIA xx

2020.11.14 01:30 GeauxTom Updated Thamuz Guide [Minor Detail] by GGT

 God Of The Abyss : Thamuz
MAJOR shout out to Firstername & ENAKOH of the MLBB community for inputting KEY information into this Thamuz guide. They deserve more credit for the information they have provided below. Big thank you for part in creating this Thamuz guide for those Thamuz mains!
Pros give builds, the game itself has pretty good builds for him. Bottom line, Thamuz’s “build” is situational but pretty simple math, timing is everything.
EDIT : Pro builds are pretty useful and situationally sound for many occasions. There are still tank builds that work for off tanking as well.
DISCLAIMER: I am NOT a pro at all. If RANK proves that someone is good to you, please by all means have a great time playing ML and thank you for dropping by. It’s all love. It’s skill & teammates that make you great. This a 5v5 after all. Haha.
Mandatory Items:
•Wiz / Tough/ Magic Boots (Movement) -
  1. I use Wizard 98% of the time being that I’ve realized Thamuz has GREAT ganking ( which leads to assist/kills ) which grants 50g (nerfed from 80g~) per assist. Nothing is free!
  2. Tough/Magic Boots for when I AM the tank or I know I won’t be able to sustain all of the straight up Physical/Magic Enemy Team. It’s a good piece of defense PHY/MAG depending on enemy team. It’s good defense when you can tell what will be thrown at you more.
• Bloodlust Axe (Attack)
Stats-
Status Effect +70 Physical Attack +10% CD Reduction
Unique +20% Spell Vamp
• Endless Battle ( Attack )
Stats -
Status Effect +65 Physical Attack +25 Mana Regen +250 HP +10% CDR +5% Movement Speed +15% Lifesteal
Unique - Divine Justice: After using an ability, the next basic attack will deal additional 70% of physical attack as true damage. This effect has a cooldown of 1.5s.
Unique Passive - Chase Fate: When Divine Justice’s effect is triggered, it will increase the hero’s movement speed 10% lasts 1 second
TIP: Your main goal is to spam your first skill unto multiple (if not) at least ONE target. This skill is also used for the mini sprint but for this section we want to emphasize the IMPORTANCE of these items plus your first skill in this scenario.
Recommended Items:
t +10% CD Reduction
Unique None
Unique Passive - Demonize: Reduces damage taken by 50% when health is less than 40% and increases your Lifesteal by 30%. Lasts 5 seconds. This effect has a 50 second cooldown
Umm, the items desc part are bit outdated
  1. wiz boots had disappeared for like 1yr+ . no more "easy gold" lol. Afaik ppl either go def boot or cdr boot
  2. bounty hunter is now "40% xtra gold" instead of flat 100. And with changes(?) in kill gold, killing same enemies multiple times yield less while shutdown-ing yields more. Generally ppl go for killing spree when using sin emblem
  3. minor stuff, bod is now 160 atk and endless is 10% lifesteal
  4. wings is now 40% reduction when < 40% hp with 40s cd; duration remains 5s
  5. athena no longer has hp shield, it has 25% magic reduction for 5s, cd 10s after exiting combat. and the stat is actually 920 hp 62 mdef iirc
  6. imo thamuz might want to include oracle (42 mdef, 800(?) hp, 30% increase to shield/regen) if enemy build antiheal, bc oracle somewhat offset/negate (not fully but it helps) antiheal
CREDIT: ENAKOH - Major Thanks !
Battle Spells :
Personally other spells may be used, but these two I feel are the most optimal for Thamuz.
Emblems:
Assassin: Bounty Hunter / Killing Spree
Bounty Hunter - Gain an extra 100 gold from killing enemy hero (Up to 1300 gold).
Killing Spree - Killing an enemy hero restore 15% HP and increase movement speed by 20% for 5 second.
Fighter : Festival of Blood
Festival of Blood -Gains 8% Spell Vamp. Killing an enemy hero grants an extra 1% Spell Vamp (up to 12%).
Thamuz’s Playstyle :
Thamuz’s Skill Set:
Thamuz’s Combo:
*** PLEASE BE AWARE OF CC TOONS *** I’ve stressed this enough but I can’t stress it enough. Getting CC’d as Thamuz is the worst feeling in the world. You can’t do a damn thing if you are CC’d period. Let someone else eat the CC THEN attack. Don’t get loaded on like a tank. You are not a PURE/TRUE/NOT a tank. A BULLY... in my gameplay upload you’ll see what I mean.
UPDATED GAME INFORMATION:
As you know the MAP had changed and so, the true laws of laning have been put down.
Lane / Route : Experience (EXP LANE)
Being Invasive: - With the new update, I personally have watch TGP (Top Global Players) through solo videos, mainly because I SoloQ.
MAJOR TIPS : CREDIT - Firstername
You made some mistakes here and there;
Thamuz is not the God of the Abyss, he is the Lord of the Abyss / Lord Lava
Wizard boots are gone rip
Blade Armor isn’t a good choice but isn’t a bad one either, I recommend replacing it with Oracle to boost his heal and sustain.
Never go with the same build over and over again, adjust your build according to the enemy’s lineup. Bloodlust Axe and Oracle are strong on Thamuz but if the enemy has a ton of anti heal you may want to reconsider building them. If they have a high magical damage, build Athena’s Shield for the protections, and so on.
Thamuz’s hardest matchup is any hero that can burst him down fast enough and being able to kite him so that he can’t heal from attacking, and antiheal (I’m looking at you Baxia)
Battle Spells: I recommend Flicker, Vengeance, or Execute, but it depends on the enemy lineup.
Flicker can help you gank more efficiently and have a backup escape in case things go badly.
Vengeance was absolutely strong on Thamuz before its revamp, now, not so much, but can still tank just as the previous one.
Execute is a risky spell to use but strong if you want to snowball early game, great for weak early game heroes, like Aldous.
The playstyle is already correct but I wanted to add a small tip against weak early game heroes.
The tactic is to not kill the minions, and instead walk behind the enemy’s minions, this will make them scared and retreat to their tower, sacrificing precious farm. Although, they may call for reinforcement from their assassin or tank so be prepared.
(Never use this tactic on Chou, instant regret)
For the skill combos, you can actually trigger his enhanced auto from his 1st thrice, to do this, you will need to use you S1, retrieve it, then wait for it to go back on cooldown. ( S1 > Retrieve > Wait > Auto > S1 > Retrieve > Auto > S1 > S2 > Auto )
For the laning phase, Thamuz can actually go jungle because his early game clear is so efficient, Jungle Thamuz is very strong and can take buff and turtle easily.
Pushing is important, but there are other objectives too, buff, crab, turtle, lord, etc. If you find enough time to take these objectives, go ahead, like I said before, his clear is insane.
Aaaaand that’s it
The Golden Rule I want to throw in: Study the items you use! Study your hero thoroughly. Test out all possibilities. Doing vs A.I is on Normal is a good way to practice if you don’t want the pressure of Classic/Ranked. It’s fine just have fun practicing while earning BP. Sometimes the A.I gank like pro level players, you learn from mistakes from over stepping, learning when to dive, etc. The Basics/Fundamentals will take you further than raw power!
Oh P.S: PLEASE PUSH TURRETS, HE HITS LIKE A TRUCK ON THEM! Turrets turrets turrets !

2020.11.13 12:40 AlansMonkeyTennis Possible stray, advice needed.

Recently my partner and I have had what is a possible stray turn up at our door (UK).
We moved into our home with out dog, Athena, in March and within weeks we had a few cat visitors that stopped by to say hello. Like in all our other homes, all came and went after getting their fussing. Sort of anyways. There is a bush in front of our house and several cats seem to view it as a kind of cat clubhouse, because they'll be in there quite a bit and seem to socialise with one another in there (this was later confirmed by the previous tenant as an on-going thing, these cats used to play with her cats).
We spotted this one cat hanging around in the neighbours garden quite quickly. She'd not really bother with other cats and just sat there, in that loaf style way that cats do, quite content. She never bothered to even look at us, let alone interact. We nicknamed her Loaf and that is how she'll be referred to from now on.
One day in September, that changed. Loaf just decided to come up and demand a fussing, she wanted to play, she stayed for ages. We didn't see her again for weeks, more than a month in fact. Then she came back once again wanting a fussing.
Now, in the last few weeks she has become slightly obsessed with us. She went from 2 spaced out visits to learning our schedules, waiting for us as we left the house for work/walking the dog etc. She started following my partner to work. She started waiting in the bush for us to get home from walking the dog. She started waiting in said bush all night long, in the cold and rain, meowing to be let in. In fact she barely seems to leave at all. Maybe for a few hours during the day? Even then we can't be sure. She goes deep into that bush and can't be spotted, then just appears at the edge of it, waiting for us to appear.
We grew concerned by her behaviour so we had her scanned for a chip by a local volunteer group so we could let her owner know. She didn't have one. We've made posts all over local FB groups. Nobody seems to know her or has responded that she belongs to them. We've tried paper collars, while ignoring her to encourage her to return home, but she stays put and keeps taking them off (we put the most recent one on a bit more securely, that was this morning, she then followed my partner to work straight after and I haven't heard her since, but I'm trying not to check so she'll go home -, I am yet to hear from any potential owner). We even asked our letting agent to check if she belonged to the previous tenant - she doesn't but said tenant confirmed she used to play with her cats sometimes, as well as the fact that the bush was a bit of a cat social club when she lived here too.
The volunteer that checked for a chip suggested some of her behaviours suggest she is a stray, specifically a recent stray learning to fend for herself (an example being the treats we used to get her still enough to check for a chip - she'd quickly snatch one and retreat towards the bush a little to eat it). However she does seem healthy and in good condition, and her fur looks well kept. Of course if she is still quite a recent stray this might check out, and at least one of our neighbours seem to be feeding her (she was outside their front door, eating from a little bowl while their daughter sat inside the front door, watching carefully).
We have had a few people move out of the area recently, including one woman who seems to have been thrown out (she had the police at her door a lot, she was always having arguments and even physical fights with partners/friends/neighbours/strangers that walked past her house... she always came and went through her window and it is highly likely that she barricaded the front door somehow as the day she left, a locksmith was called who couldn't get the door open so he ended up climbing in through the window in order to let the housing agents in through the front door). We know she had at least 1 cat, but we haven't seen said cat in months, long before she was booted out. His name was Reggie (according to her) and he looked a bit dishevelled as the fur on his back legs was missing, but that might have been due to surgery/illness etc.
I'd love some thoughts on what is happening here. Loaf literally went from 2 visits where she got a fussing (and a small number of treats, we made a single packet last over 6 months between all our cat visitors as we only let them have one or two when we say hello) to being totally obsessed and acting as though she doesn't have a home. We have only let her inside the house ONCE and that was when someone was coming to check her chip. She sat kneading the blanket we put down from her and purred a lot, but also seemed quite keen to leave.
Also, for those who might ask, she is a tortoise shell cat with mainly white fur with patches of black and ginger across her face, body and legs.

2020.11.06 09:25 RainSpectreX Some Thoughts on the Salvageability of AA5's Main Villain

So, I've been writing out that Dual Destinies rewrite thing, and I think one of the most...interesting, points to discuss in regards to my changes is in regards to the villains. Discounting Marlon (who is a fan favourite for good reason, and whose case is a complicated talking point), the culprits of the game are...not good, to say least. Tonate is a lazy, one-note first case villain after previous games had started drifting more and more away from that, L'Belle is one-note villainous douchebag and has plans and motivations which are riddled with plot holes and nonsense logic, and Means is an infuriating trainwreck who just refuses to shut up while also having no depth to speak of.
And then, of course, there's the phantom.
AA main villains are an interesting bunch to talk about because, inherently, AA games are about mysteries. They are about deduction and exposing the truth, even if that is fought against. Creating a "villain" in such a story is tricky on its own when the character even being a villain is part of the twist. So, for the "grand" stories which are what make up the concluding cases, the question becomes what would be a fitting villain to be faced in such a context.
Generally, you can separate the "major" AA villains into two camps.
"Supreme Power"
In these cases, the villain is a figure who represents some immense kind of powerful authority of some kind, and wields this the moment you even get close to discovering the truth. Even getting near them is a struggle, and they will make you know that well.
Examples: Von Karma, Gant, Morgan (not faced directly, but is the mastermind of Bridge to Turnabout), Alba, Blaise (not the final culprit, but immensely important regardless), Megundal (who fits this in just one relatively short case that ends in him burning alive, plus a handful of flashbacks, not bad) and Ga'ran (who is an objectively terrible character, but still fits the mold)
"Embodiment of Evil"
The less common model. A character who is built up not through their sheer power, but because of the immensely horrifying degrees of human malice which makes them capable of acts of genuine cruelty and spite. These ones are much, much darker in terms of narrative tone.
Examples: Engarde, Dahlia, Kristoph, Simon (Keyes)
What's interesting then about "the phantom" is that he's neither of these types. The only other "important" AA villain I can name who does that is Chrogray (who is just an ordinary human being acting out of desperate circumstances he found himself manipulated into), but the phantom is even more stark because of what the entire creative gimmick of him is.
You literally know nothing about him.
To quote AA5's art director Takuro Fuse:
"The original story was a bit different, and the final boss was not the Phantom, but someone complete different. There’d be a police detective who was the former partner of prosecutor Yugami, and even though everyone thought he’d be dead, he’d turn out to be still alive, masquerading as Ban…. So after a lot of changes, we ended up with the story as it is now, and I think it’s much more shocking now. It all ends without us learning who the Phantom really is, so I think many of the players will feel frustrated, wanting to punch the final boss in his face, but not being able too. Oh yeah, I remember that during the development, we talked about not killing off Ban."
Bolded the important part, but really that entire paragraph is worth paying attention to. It's pretty obvious, just from how Fuse framed it, that what the devs felt was "interesting" about the phantom is that he was completely enigmatic as a character. You never learn who he is, what his exact deal is, who or what his employer is, and even his real personality or face. He is a complete enigma as a character.
And, on its own, this is an actually genuinely fascinating idea. Ambiguity, on its own terms, can be a very powerful tool in driving audience perception, and the idea of a mystery villain who does terrible things for reasons one can't really "understand" in conventional terms, is an ambitious one.
Unfortunately, this isn't what happens with the Phantom, and indeed the twist ends up the shining demonstration of all of AA5's failings.
One of the key factors which make AA's most loved villains so compelling is the very specific ways they make the player hate them through pointed acts of evil. Von Karma murdered his rival purely for proving he forged evidence, groomed said rivals son into an apprentice, then had him framed for murder. Gant murdered Neil and made Lana think Ema did it just to use her. Engarde helped drive his ex-girlfriend to commit suicide in a petty attempt to one-up his rival, and blackmails Phoenix into defending his guilty ass. Dahlia is a remorseless, spiteful monster who successfully manipulates Fawless into killing himself in the middle of the court room. Kristoph destroyed Phoenix's career and laid a death trap for a 12 year old girl just to cover his tracks. The list goes on, where the actions they commit, and the way they conduct themselves, are so horrifying they make them feel like the true test of ones justice, in a sense.
The Phantom isn't like that, though. Sure, he killed Apollo's best friend and Athena's mother, but neither of these actions had emotional motivations, and in fact his involvement with them makes them lose emotional weight. He has no backstory or past crimes which have to be answered for, and he takes no pride or pleasure in them either. No hate, no spite, nothing, and while that's part and parcel of the character, it's an inherently bad choice for crafting the concluding act of the story of a game like Ace Attorney.
I've stated my issues with the use of him as an "answer" to the UR-1 incident, and I think I should give a more detailed explanation there. While superficially the reveal has similarities to DL-6 and SL-9, the crucial difference is that the respective reveals of Von Karma and Gant's actions make the stories that much more horrifying in a way and also cruel and desperate, furthering the desire to give the story some kind of happy conclusion. In UR-1, meanwhile, all the Phantom really seems to exist as is an "out" so that Blackquill gets to go free and Athena doesn't have to suffer (even though the incident would've made more sense to be written as an accident), as his involvement does nothing for the emotional narrative of the case. Athena barely even seems that angry about the revelation.
And that's the next thing to discuss, the mechanics of the twist itself. Having Fulbright, a character who'd been established as the lovable comic relief of the main cast, be secretly a villain is a fantastic idea. AA has historically had very few main cast members be culprits, the only other example being Godot, and Fulbright is essentially a take on the legendary "Yasu is the culprit" twist from Portopia, a shocking turnaround which leaves people talking about the game for years to come.
Unfortunately, the twist falls apart there as well because of how incredibly callously it disregards the players emotional connection to Fulbright himself. As soon as the reveal happens, no one expresses any horror at the idea that their friend was the culprit, they just talk about their anger for the murders he committed and how he lied to them. The real Fulbright's death is itself weakly thrown in as an explanation for what happened to him, and idea that a genuinely good man has died pointlessly seems not even at the mind of anyone in the room. There's legitimately nothing to connect the players feelings with the person they knew with the villain they have to defeat in a satisfying way, and it's clear from that Fuse quote even the devs had second thoughts about killing Fulbright off the way they did.
A good way to contrast this is with the mastermind of Investigations 2 (and best boi), Simon Keyes. Simon, like the Phantom, is a shocking twist villain whose identity is revealed just before the final section of the game, and is a seemingly amicable and friendly character hiding his true nature. Unlike Fulbright/Phantom, however, Simon is given pointed weight come the reveal regarding how his prior perception ties into the person he really is. Once the reveal happens, one gets to look back on his prior appearances and see the image of the mask an extremely manipulative, unbalanced and cruel misanthrope wears in order to survive.
PhantomBright meanwhile basically fails to reconcile the Fulbright we know with the villain we are revealed, and while part of that may be the point it just feels like an utter waste of a good character for the purpose of a shock twist. Fulbright has way more screentime as well, so that just makes the ultimate reveal just feel all the more out of place.
Oh, let us not forget the contradictions, most infamously the lighter. This is a recurring problem in AA5, presenting major mysteries only to basically give them handwave answers, and the lighter just creates a gapping plot hole that makes the Phantom look like a complete idiot. Seriously, dude, you have Starbuck about to be found guilty. What the hell does an emotionless spy get from this?
So, with the player having little real drive to confront the Phantom, and him doing nothing with the twist of his true identity beyond it existing, what exactly is there for the game to do? To that end...I'm not quite sure. Turnabout for Tomorrow seems incredibly split between trying to find some kind of conclusion to the games aimless, nonsensical "Dark Age of the Law" plotline in spite of there being almost nothing connecting the events of the case to the thread in a substantial way, and a narrative justification for Athena's Mood Matrix outside of being her gimmick, capped off by Phoenix saying "HOPE" a dozen times like he's Nagito Komaeda (maybe that "AA5 was influenced by Danganronpa" theory might have some weight to it...). The Phantom seems like an afterthought in the proceedings, a cheap bad guy who the game almost forgets is there (the only thing they can really do with him is say he's emotionless) and is forgotten the moment his part is up. He's just "there" essentially, and the attempt at ambiguity makes him less of part of the story, not more.
So, is there a way to have fixed the character? That's debatable, I think. The thing is that the twist is built on a number of contradicting ideas with no clear creative direction. The issue is that the Phantom's entire character essentially creates a black hole of faults. He can't tie into Fulbright, can't have a deeper emotional connection to the storyline, isn't really intimidating in any way, he's just a random spy at the end of the day with hazy motives. His existence is basically just a big unresolved point on the story.
Still, I think the ideas that comprise him, the ambiguous villain you can't truly understand, and the shocking betrayal character, are good ones, and there's a lot that could've been mined from, say, Fulbright secretly being a villain that could've continued themes explored in previous games in new and interesting ways. Just...not both at once, I guess. Putting the two together just makes the whole thing seem rather pointless.
Does anyone have their own takes here? I'm curious what they think about this opinion piece.

2020.11.02 04:22 HeadbangHero Looking for my Halloween homies (A love story)

I'm on pc and can't remember who I played with on Halloween and I never got to add you. I was solo slooping and a random joined me. I start the festival voyage because I wanted to have some goal while getting into random fights. I see a reapers bounty heading to turn in and wanted to intercept (I have no mic btw) and before I even mark it this dude auto chats Aye! And im like let's gooo. They park at reapers and I sneak on to kill both players. Turn in the chest and the rest of their loot. We raised a reapers flag and what do you know someone was nice enough to leave a lvl4 emmisaryflag at reapers as a gift. I knew it would be a good day. We sink A ship with nothing on it and carry on to find a lvl4 athenas brig. After fighting for like 10 min im bilging for my life while he's boarding and when I die I spam well played (it was a great fight) thinking we sunk and when I come back this mofo has their sails wrecked, ship ablaze, and WE SANK THEM. Hella athenas loot. Gg. Got my first athena steal with him and they chased us for like an hour probably and lots of other good fights happened while running. I had to leave the game while the brig was still chasing us. But I got to level 3 athenas and im not even pirate legend yet. I just wanted to talk to my partner and the players on the brig about it because even tho they lost some loot, I think they had fun. If you see this, my Halloween homies, dm me. We gotta do that again.
